2.8 GPA transfer student help

So here's the help I need. I'll try to give all the information and see what advice I get in return. Any CONSTRUCTIVE advice would be nice.

I am trying to transfer to:

--- Tulane University
--- University Of Boston
--- University of Mass Amherst

Here is all the information I think might be helpful for any advice, comments or such you can give:

1: I'm at community college right now. I have 59 credits with a gpa of 2.84.

2: IT's not the best GPA I know, but for the past 27 credits I've gotten straight As.

3: I'm taking 18 more credits this semester ( took 18 before) This semester I'm taking Ethnic Literature, American Government, Philosophy, Media Writing, Creative Writing, and Physical Geography.

4: I have multiple recommendations from teachers and jobs. I worked 30 hours last semester with 18 credits and got 3.83. I'll be doing the same this semester.

5: I graduated with a 3.4 gpa in HS (weighted) and a 28 ACT score.

6: Not sure if this is important but I'm 6 credits shy of an associates Degree at my CC.

What advice do you guys have for me? Do you think these schools are in range? Tulane is my top choice but I'm not sure if I can transfer. I know that they said a 2.8 is the minimum but I'm not sure how good a chance I have. I know all credits wont transfer over.

Thanks a lot

Upward trend helps and privates do look at that. However, for very competitive colleges, it still may not be enough. Looking at collegeboard dot com for stats, Tulane accepted only 373 out of 2128 transfer students. I doubt you’d make the transfer cut at Tulane unless you have an incredible incredible hook. Amherst has a better shot as they accepted more than half of their transfer applicants (1991 out of 3204). But even at over half, your 2.8 has to compete against all those transfer students with over a 3.0.

I guess you will have to dig around for more statistics to see what is plausible for you–remember to select a few “safeties” which are places that are almost guaranteed to accept you and that you know you can afford. It’s fine to apply to a dream school like Tulane as long as you have your safeties lined up as well.

Thanks!

I asked her this question: I was curious what the ‘average’ transfer GPA of a student who applies for transfer to Tulane is? I will have roughly 60 credits and will be transferring with between a 2.8-3.0 and I was wondering if the average is higher, lower, or right around my ballpark so I can decide if I need to try and attempt a larger course load. I would be interested in your Public Health major at Tulane, maybe even your “4+1” program.

and I got this answer back:
We do not have an average GPA, but generally we look for at least a 3.0 college GPA, so you are quite close to this range and I would encourage you to apply with what you have earned so far.

I’m just not sure what that exactly means

University of Boston is suuuuper tough to get into. Don’t even think they took 1 transfer student last year. Or freshman…

Although your GPA is rather low for the schools you listed, your upward trend is amazing. To be honest, I think you have a chance at Tulane. Write a good personal statement and keep your GPA high in your current classes.
As far as Boston University, I think it might be tough for you. However, I believe that you can gain admission to U MASS easily.
By the way, you said you received straight A’s your last 27 credits. Were they all A’s OR were there some A-'s in there? :)

@bottlecap: Thank you! And my CC doesn’t do + and Minus they only do a flat grade. But I do know, cuz some of those teachers wrote me recons, that I got a 98 a 91, a 95, a 93 in 4 of those classes.

@Cest: Thank you! I’ll just do BU for grad school

@HeMustBeMagic, cestmattieu12 was joking because it’s Boston University not University of Boston. I don’t know how recent the data I found is, but BU accepted 719/2518 transfer students one year.

LOL my bad well thank you for that!
