i tagged for davis for security, but any chances at irvine or ucsd? majoring in philosophy

According to the Statfinder, last year’s average GPA admitted for philosophy majors at UCI was 3.37. I think you still have a shot at UCI with a 2.97. However, I do not think that you have a shot at UCSD, because from what I heard, thier cutoff GPA for non-impacted majors was a 3.2 last year and it won’t drop. (if your TAG for UCSD was still valid, you only needed a 3.0)

UCSD - no.

UCI - probably.

@Berkeleyphil

I am not familiar with Statfinder. I am wondering if you could assist me on what the average transfer GPA was for Political Science at UCI
Thanks for your time!

@ vivthegreat: google UC Stat Finder and then play around with the different tables you can make and try to find out all the stats you need (its pretty easy to do).

@ alanav; UCSD - probably not, UCI - probably not

The UC’s are becoming more and more strict and unwilling to grant admission to those with gpa’s less than a 3.0.

@lmendoza: Not true. Some UCs take sub-3.0 transfers into non-impacted majors, UCI being one of them. UCSD/UCB/UCLA are out of the question, but there are other UC options out there other than the top three.

@Grimes: I should have been more specific. The top and mid tier UC’s are becoming less and less willing to grant admission but when a major is not impacted always helps.

i actually DID tag for UCSD, but got a B- in spanish, which landed me off a 3.0… my teacher says shell let me retake the final when school starts and change my grade to a B if i do better… which will put me above a 3.0.

Should i retake the test and just update my grades to the UCs? or will they not care in february?

Hey guys. I am an NJ resident who is planning on applying for spring 2012. I am a chemistry major at a brookdale community college and will have at least 70-80 credits. I will be done with all the prerequisites for my degree by then. My GPA as of now is 4.0 (50 credits). If I maintain this, what are my chances of getting into Irvine, UCSD, USC, and Berkeley?

@alanav: The January update must be completed by the end of the month, and that’s the final step in what’s used to determine your admission decision. Anything you give them after that is irrelevant as far as changing your decision goes (for the better, not for the worse.)

So if you can retake that test and get your grade switched before the window closes on the January update, go for it. If you can’t get it done until February, forget it.

@bottlecap: With a 4.0 you’ll be in at all those schools mentioned for sure with the exception of Berkeley. They do comprehensive reviews, so they care about more than just your GPA (ECs, essays, etc.) A 4.0 definitely sets a good base for Berkeley admission, but it’s not the sole determining factor. I’ve seen some 4.0 people get denied.

@Grimes99: Doesn’t UCLA do comprehensive reviews as well? Some people say that UCLA reads essays and some say they don’t. Do you know the answer for this?

@berkeleyphil: Yes, UCLA does comprehensive reviews. UCI does as well, and I’m not sure about UCSC/UCSB/UCD.

@grimes dont they ask for your official transcript from the college AFTER they accept you? so wouldnt that buy me sometime? so would it be a bad idea to put down that i got a B even tho i dont know but would later on?

LOL sorry just covering all my bases.

@alanav09: That’s correct, but if you guess and put down the wrong grade, you can kiss your entire application bye bye haha.
