2 Years of History

I am a sophomore and currently I have taken no history classes. I took AP human geography as a freshman and no social studies this year. I am taking APUSH next year probably AP euro senior year. Do colleges like vanderbilt care if I’ve only taken 2 years?

https://virg.vanderbilt.edu/virgweb/CDSC.aspx?year=2017 says that Vanderbilt requires 1 history and 2 social studies (history and geography typically count as social studies for this purpose) for frosh applicants, but recommends 1 history and 3 social studies.

So your AP HG, AP USH, and AP EH would meet the minimum requirement, but not the recommendation. However, doesn’t your high school have other requirements that could also count as social studies (commonly civics / US government, sometimes economics)?

Most competitive colleges recommend 3 years of social studies, so if there is anyway to squeeze another history class in that would be ideal.

Also, keep an eye on the state requirements, though I imagine your guidance counselor is doing that. In NY you need 4 years of social studies for a diploma.

Yes, I will meet the requirements for social studies to graduate. Tennessee requires 3 social studies, including us history. i will also take ap macroeconomics and ap gov and ap psych. I’m just concerned with the history portion. I would rather not take 2 in one year.

If you have AP human Geo, APUSH, and AP Euro, you would need one more social science class so see if you can double up next year with another class (honors economics or AP gov for instance would work). That would make the 2 years of history + 2 other social sciences.

Do you also have:

  • bio, chem, physics + 1 more science
  • Foreign language through level 3 or 4
  • math through precalculus or calculus
  • 4 units of English

i will have math thru pre cal. Im taking ap environmental science next year and ap physics as a senior. and im taking french 3 next year and ap as a senior.

Then, all is good
