2 years of latin + 2 years of german=4 years of language?

Would I need to take 3 years of German to fulfil certain requirements of 3 years of a language or will my 2 of latin and 2 of german be sufficient. my school require 2 years of latin and 2 of a modern laguage and i'm debating whether to pursue a 3rd year of german

EDIT: the reason im asking is b/c i think colleges require 3 years of a MODERN laguage but would 2 years of latin technially count toward this

Usually, colleges like to see 3-4 years of the SAME language. Whether it's Latin or German would be irrelevant. You could pursue a third year of German, or a third year of Latin if it's available and you prefer it, but I would strongly recommend that you take a third year of at least one of them.

I agree with salamander. I have heard kids tell me that there are some schools that prefer a modern language, but I don't think most care whether it's modern or classical. Mostly it's the 3 years of the same language that they want.

I have one kid who's done Spanish and the other one has studied Latin. So far, we haven't encountered any schools that have a problem with the Latin.

It would be a good idea, though, to look at the colleges you're most especially interested in and see if they have a modern language preference. Otherwise, just take a third year of whichever one you prefer... if you are able to. (That said, if you are an otherwise attractive applicant to a college, I don't think they'd hold your application up on the 2 yrs Latin/2 yrs German thing. JMO.)
