20 Unit Cap

So I know that you have to go see the Dean of your school (or is it one of the counselors?) in order to sign up for more than 20 units. However, does anyone know if it is difficult to get the authorization to sign up for more than 20 units? Would the Dean/counselor give me a hard time about it?

I am a freshman and as such I have no GPA yet.

Also, what is considered a 'high' GPA here at UCI? I know that if i were an upperclassman, and wanted to enroll in more than 20 units, the Dean/counselor would look at my transcript and GPA in order to determine whether or not I would be able to handle the workload, before authorizing me (am I correct?) Would something like a 3.0 be considered a 'good' GPA?

3.0 is barely mediocre; to be considered "competitive," one has to maintain at least a 3.5.

Because you're a freshman, it's hard to say they will give you any chance at enrolling in more than 20 units unless you had an outstanding status on your application. You should definitely call the counselor and ask, though. Good luck
