definitely, the results of college decisions among the cc participants will serve as useful cases for all others to consider. we all know that cc participants are upper-end, much higher-qualified with 2,100 plus sat scores, 4.0 something weighted gpa, top 5% of the class, high achieving leaders in perhaps more than a couple of areas, good record ecs, well-written essays, good teacher recs, etc. etc. you name it, they got it.

despite all these qualifications/achievements, a number of them face (surprising) disappointments. some could get over with quite well, many not quite so. as parent, i feel so saddened to see so many qualified, in fact even over-qualified, students to be disappointed and heartbroken. you have so much future waiting for you.

here are some of the whys it’s going to be so tough at least in the next few years.

1) chances of being accepted by the ivies quite slim, 10% plus or minus. from now on, especially next year when the highest-ever number of hs graduates (more than 3.2 million) going to colleges, so each and every college applicant needs to evaluate the probabilities of being accepted by their dream (those ivies plus stanford/mit), reach, and even safety schools.

2) because of weaker us dollars, more and more students from all over the world will be applying to us colleges; 20% something cheaper than in the past. their chances are not going to be better, in fact much worse, especially for asians, and also to a degree for all students.

3) many of reach schools, those ranging from 20 to 40 rankings by us news and world, and many top lacs, will become more of the dream schools. in fact, many of them should have been dream schools in the first place.

4) ivies and many elite schools are going to give more financial aids, better chances to those students from lower (income) ses families cause they are starting to have more funds/donations. that means more competition. we’re already witnessing it happening.

5) for those going to grad schools, you’ll also see more competition especially among the mba applicants why? many losing jobs, white-collar executive jobs, because of weaker economy, will opt to go back to colleges, hoping for better career opportunities in the next business cycle while attending colleges again. this we will have to wait and see as we go along.

so dream schools are going to be much much harder, while reach schools will in all practicality become in many cases as hard as dream schools and of course many safeties will not be safeties any more.

i am not trying to be pessimistic, but rather more realistic. dream schools like hypsm are like super-dream schools and all the rest in top 10 or 15 will continue to be dreams for many.

my point is you all are excellent, young bright kids. the best and the brightest. to be accepted to ivies/top elite schools, you need to be really really good, that need a bit of luck too. luck yes, but more likely than not only for those among the top. my best wishes and best of luck to you all.
