Supposedly high schools receive them in "early December." When do students generally find out? Has anyone gotten them yet? I ask because D suddenly got a boatload of college mail yesterday, which made me wonder if the new scores had already gotten sent out to the colleges.

The true boatload of mail based on colleges obtaining mailing lists based on scores is supposed to happen in January. Some colleges target mail to students in advance of PSAT scores based on other sources.

But, yeah, according to another CC thread,

some 2008 PSAT scores have arrived at schools by UPS and have been distributed to students by high school counselors. My family gets PSAT scores by postal mail to our house, because we're homeschoolers, and we haven't seen the 2008 scores yet--nor have we seen a sudden flood in college mail beyond the usual year-round trickle.

As I mentioned on the other thread, our HS releases PSAT scores in mid-December, shortly before the winter break. The GC's meet with the students in groups to help interpret the scores.

And yes, college mail has reappeared in our mailbox too. I had to laugh because the first piece of mail was from.... you guessed it.... Washington University-St. Louis. Probably not the last mailing from them we'll see ;)

I have a friend in Cali who said her son has started receiving a lot of mail again in the past week, though my son hasn't. Not sure whether it's PSAT related or not.

Our district tells schools to hold onto them until mid-January, but I know they have them much sooner. I'm gong to try to sweet talk our head counselor next week. :)

Youdon'tsay -- Sounds like a plan. I may try that tactic also. :)

Our school sent them out yesterday and the scores came in today's mail

Maybe you could say you're checking out some colleges over winter break and you need to have an idea of what caliber to look at based on PSAT scores? I'm tempted to do something like this - I hate the thought of waiting till January.

I called D's GC about the scores. I told him I had a friend (I'm suddenly friends with the parent of a CCer from NJ who posted on the other thread mentioned by tokenadult, lol) whose child had already received them, and by any chance had they come in to our high school yet? I explained that D was applying for a program that required PSAT or SAT scores (this is true), and would like for her updated scores to be sent if they were better. The GC said the school hadn't received them, and called over to the BOE office but they didn't have them yet either. Sigh.

Last year D's school sent the scores out in early December - but I was hoping she'd get them before she takes the SAT next Dec. 6th. She may, but I can't be sure - just don't want to bother the guidance office right now - they're a little busy right nowm with this year's seniors and their college apps.

mathmom, that's exactly what I was going to say -- and it's true. If by some miracle he's in the NMSF range, that will change what we do over the winter break.

If you register your email on collegeboard.com they will email you when they are available in mid-December.

from their website
My College QuickStart - PSAT Scores Online
"Congratulations, you're one of the first students to request access to 2008 test results through My College QuickStart.

Enter your email address below, and we'll let you know as soon as your results are available online—in mid-December."

D got hers today in school. She was short of last years cut off so she is upset. Oh well, cant win them all!

Last year S2's school gave them out in mid-January. At least we'll be able to get them online earlier if the school pulls that stunt again. We're trying to put together some sort of college visit(s) over the long weekend after semester finals.

Good luck, CountingDown - I'm sure your S2's scores will be just fine.

Spriing162 - my D got her scores on Wed. and her's fell short of last year's cutoff too. She's a little disappointed, but I think it was good for her. Now she's actually studying vocab for next week's SAT. I have a feeling that if she had done just a few points better, she wouldn't have seen the point in practicing. Not sure it will help, but at least she's trying.

mom2010, it says you have to have the access code from the paper score report. If I had that, wouldn't I have the score already? :(

If you created a MyCollege Quick Start account last year, I think you'll be able to see your score on December 15 without having to create a new account.

It is really quite ridiculous, the whole deal about the PSAT score first going to the school, and only then being distributed to the students.

It's all part of the PSAT being a "preparation" for the SAT. College Board wants schools to explain to students and parents what the PSAT scores mean in relation to strengths and weaknesses on SAT subject matter. You'd be amazed how many students and parents don't have a clue about college admissions tests (all posters on CC excepted, of course).

Youdon'tsay ~ If you have last years PSAT score report you are able to use the code assigned to your student to set up an account at collegeboard.com. The code is in the top right and lower right corners of the score report (S1's code starts with a letter than a 9 digit number then another letter.) You should then be able to enter your email address and receive the email when the scores are available on line.

Or just hang out on CC, because you know as soon as scores are available online, someone will announce it -- no email notification from the College Board necessary!! :D
