kiwifruit: Yes, as part of their Region-at-Large component.

I'm going to try to write a SF or short story too. Is there a winner for each genre?

^ yup! a few actually. but it's really competitive.

About how many submissions does Scholastic receive and about how many pieces are actually chosen?

It says on their website. Out of about 9,000 works, 1,400 make it to nationals.

"More than 75,000 students will accept the challenge to present their best creative work for review by artistic and literary professionals. More than 30,000 teens will be recognized regionally and approximately 1,000 will go on to earn national awards."

The most outstanding works of art and writing from each of the affiliate programs are forwarded to New York City to be assessed on a national level. To give you an idea of how many qualify for national level review, panels of professional jurors reviewed more than 7,148 works of art and 1,717 manuscripts to select the 1,400 national award recipients in 2006. Graduating seniors who submit a body of work in the Portfolio Categories—art, photography, general writing or nonfiction—compete for local and national scholarships bestowed by the regional programs, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and a network of arts institutes, colleges and universities.

You're right. i misunderstood the numbers.

75,000?!? Well, I gotta step it up.

I'm confused. 8,865 or 75,000?

75,000 .

(out of those, 9k make it to nationals. out of those, 1400 win awards.)

Is anyone else having trouble registering?

I was until I turned off my pop-up blocker. That might be your problem, too.

augh what the hell!!!

i registered for Writing, and now the only options in the dropdown menu are for Art.

Is anyone else having this problem?

And if so (or if not), how do I fix it?!

:( :(

If you are entering Region at Large, what are the limitations for submissions and stuff? like how many submissions can you enter for each category, etc? I can't find anywhere it tells you.

Also, what if you are not homeschooled, but at your school you don't take art (doesn't fit in my sched). What do you do about a teacher?

I emailed them about it, and they said they'd hopefully have fixed any problems with the dropdown menu (where it says Art and should say Writing) and incorrect ages by Monday evening.

^ oh, that's good.

How many entries are you submitting, everyone?

When do we hear if we won or not?

mflevity: yep, same response here. it's not working just yet, but i'll give it a week or so before jumping to any conclusions. =)

mj93: i'm submitting for gen. writing portfolio, dramatic script, short short story, and poetry. woo!

brosfam: last year, i found out about regional in early march and national in late april.

Site still doesn't work properly :(

Yeah, it's annoying.

I always forget that you can only submit one poetry entry, and it always bothers me.

I'm submitting one collection of poetry (with some song lyrics in that as well), one personal essay, and one short short story.
