For 2008:

(I) CC-transfers: 3,709 applicants, 1,270 accepted, and an admit rate of only 34.2%

(II) Other-transfers: 2,238 applicants, 223 accepted, and an admit rate of 10.0%.

Where did you get this?

its in statistics tables at uf statistics xml list site.

its true

Not too shabby, but I think Community College Transfers get somewhat of an advantage over the Other-Transfers. We should endeavor to be fair to both demographics.

Just my two cents…

anyone know AVERAGE GPA of incoming transfer?

question: what about people who transfer from state universities?

“other transfers” includes those attempting to transfer from state universities

oh. i thought it meant freshman transfers.
man that sucks.
FSU all the way.

Other-transfers = Anyone who is trying to transfer into the University of Florida without an Associates degree from one of Florida’s 28 Community Colleges. Special note: Even Florida Community College students who have not earned Associates Degrees are still considered Other-transfers.

The CC-transfers as you can see get special consideration. Overall you can see that they have a 24.2% advantage over the Other-transfers.

As I was saying before we should endeavor to have equality between these two demographics. It seems only fair…

SSobick i couldn’t disagree more.

i think the rest of florida’s state universities would suffer greatly if preference wasn’t given to those coming from a CC with an AA.

could you imagine everyone attempting to jump shift to the University of Florida after two years?

the problem is, i got to UNF and they don’t have my major.
so i have UF, USF, and FSU to choose from to transfer to.

Statement: i think the rest of florida’s state universities would suffer greatly if preference wasn’t given to those coming from a CC with an AA.

Retort: Please expound on why you believe this. Why do we adhere to a public policy instituted in the 1950’s that is based around cronyism? The 2 + 2 system is still relevant, but we should also be fair and equitable to the Other-transfers as well.

Statement: could you imagine everyone attempting to jump shift to the University of Florida after two years?

Retort: What does it matter if 10,000 apply to be Other-transfers if only 600 are accepted total. It is not like it’s going to hurt the other Universities in the State University System of Florida by more than a mere scratch.

in response to the last “retort”.

exactly, currently there is no problem [;

^ Well if UF accepted 400 more Other-transfers than that would in turn leave only 900 spots for the CC-transfers.

It would still be a 3 to 2 rate (hense cronyism is kept, but atlease UF would attempt to have a more even distribution).

Another point: as we speak the Community Colleges are being expanded to State Colleges. Almost all of the 28 Community Colleges are planning to offer Bachelor degree programs in the near future.

So why is it such a necessity to adhere to the 2 + 2 agreement (Cold War era public policy by the way), when these students can complete their studies at one of the expanded State Colleges?

SSobick i think it’s unfair to cop out to CC’s now offering BA’s.

The CC’s are offering a select FEW BA’s.

^ I do not believe that it is a cop out to try and level the playing field. Let us not forget that the Constitutions stipulates that we must adhere to the Equal Protection Clause.

I am of the opinion that CC-transfers should no longer get to keep their monopoly over the majority of limited transfer spots. As stated earlier the missions of these institutions have changed and the converted State Colleges will diversify their academic portfolios in the years to come. Some already offer over 5 Bachelor degree programs. I think the 2 + 2 System is kind of a relic of the past and is not needed for great schools like the University of Florida and Florida State University.

5 in my eyes isn’t a lot. especially when the state’s education budget is only going to be cut more.

ps. those limited transfer spots are only going to become even more limited over the next several years.

“ps. those limited transfer spots are only going to become even more limited over the next several years.”

That is why it is all the more crucial that we can provide more opportunities to the Other-transfers.

“5 in my eyes isn’t a lot. especially when the state’s education budget is only going to be cut more.”

Well the CC-transfers have 9 other Universities to choose from if UF does not come thru. They might also have the opportunity to attend New College as well.

It’s not like they do not have options, and transfering into UF should not be an entitlement.
