Hi I am in my first year of college and I am working toward transferring to Haas. I am thinking of applying next year. Can someone tell me what requirements or procedures they had to go through when applying? I heard you had to write multiple essays throughout your application process? If so can someone please elaborate on what was required or tell me what the essay topics were on. I know they won't be the same but it is just to give me an idea of what to expect.

You have to fill out the UC transfer application Nov 1-30 which includes two essays with a 1000 word total between them, you split it however you like (250-word minimum for each). January 7-31 you update that same app with your fall scores and your spring schedule. Then myBerkeley app has to be done by January 31 also which is pretty much a rehash of what you put in your UC app plus the list of pre-reqs you fulfilled as well as another essay (500 words) .

The prompts for this one was, in short: a) Describe an experience you had in a culture different from your own or b) if you'd change one thing you've done in your life what would it be?

For the myBerkeley application were you required to do both of those prompts and be under 500 words? Or was it only one prompt and under 500 words.

usmic_izzy did not post the full prompt (missed a few important parts). Here are the full prompts:

If you could change one thing you've done in your life, what would it be, and how would you do it differently?

Describe an experience you have had in a culture different from your own, and how has it prepared you for a diverse world?

You pick one of those and make it 'approximately 500 words'. Those are the instructions they gave. They also make a point of saying that it doesn't matter which prompt you choose, they give both options equal weight.

The average is 3.9 (just average!!!) My friend had 4.0 and was rejected, it’s just extremely competitive. You need to be really stand out with ECs and have decent essays (they actually read all of them)

I got a 3.83 but I know a freind with a 4.0 and crazy ECs (clubs) that got rejected, I feel for him. My ECs were working 25-30hrs a week and being a PTK honors society member. I really think it’s the essays that helped me though, because they were some of the best I’ve written. But keep in mind, GPA is only half the story regarding grades. The three courses I got Bs in were not really core major prereqs. The first B was in an algebra class I took the first semester (the A in stats and Calc probably cleared this one up), the second in biology with a lab (this freaking class was 5 hours long on monday mornings, lab then lecture, ughghg don’t get me started, I am no biologist, and thirdly, an introductory humanities class. I’m sure it would have been different if I had a 3.83 but got Bs in macro or micro econ, Calculus, Statistics, etc. Keep that in mind, you need As in these prereqs in my opinion. I also took both accounting series, got two As which may have helped (required for UCSB, not haas)

A4sky, if you get the chance, the transfer and re-admission center on campus offers up a first come first serve essay workshop, where an admissions counselor will read your work with you one on one in a closed room and offer up suggestions. I would HIGHLY reccomend going to these (It was back in November if I recall, there were two workshops). The help I got was invaluable, honestly. I also got to meet a few Haas students who were asked to come. Like I said, lots of help and I would say look for that and don’t miss it!
