Thanks, silverturtle. It’s looking like I won’t make it unless by some miracle it drops 2 points. And Harambee, same here. :(

^There’s a good chance the cutoff might drop down 2 points, the scores were down something like 25% this year, so at least there’s hope.

^ Are you sure about that statistic? In that case, my 205 might even make it in Ohio, but that is unlikely and so is that statistic.

Anyway, is there any reward for commended? Are there scholarship possibilities, or if you don;t make semifinalist then you are f***ed? I hate stupid PSAT, if only I could have done as well as my 2320+ SAT.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!

I think he’s referring to the statistic that 25% of juniors got lower scores this year than they did last year.

221, I could’ve done better but I got bored during the test and fell asleep so whatever. And bubbled in wrong once, skipped 1 on accident.

70 CR
60 M
68 W
(Composite Score: 198)

…Feeling like a moron is not much fun. Any chance of commendation for a performance that doesn’t “merit” it?

I am so sad. I worked so hard and my score does not even reflect the truth. Unfortunately the score is a fact that everyone sees. They do not see my school rank (1 out of 865) and my SAT subject Test scores, or even AP scores.

I know that I going to get commended. Is there a faint chance that I can qualify for NMSF?

I am taking my first SAT on January 2010. I need to aim for 2200+. Do you think it is feasible?

Please help me calm down.

Has anyone gotten a letter from TASP yet? I haven’t gotten my PSAT scores back from my school yet, but since I got a letter from TASP I can assume that I probably made the cut for NMSF, right?

^yeah, I just got my letter from TASP. I don’t think that you’ve made the cutoff for NMSF just because you made TASP. I think they send the letter to those past a certain percentile. My score was lower than past NMSF cutoffs for my state.

This has probably been asked already, but I’m not about to sift through 71 pages of comments, so, does scoring in the 98th percentile merit (no pun intended) anything? (Bearing in mind I am Hispanic, although I don’t like to be cut slack.)

Satacer, you will probably end up as commended. You have to remember, though, that although your PSAT score is the only influence on semifinalist status, colleges will never see your score. They will, however, see your rank, GPA, subject test scores, AP scores, and the like. Don’t let one bad score that means almost nothing get you down! I think you could definitely score that highly on your SATs, as many people I know have obtained higher scores on their SATs than PSATs. If you work as hard as you pledge you will, I see no reason why your score should not be this high. Good luck!!

DirkGentley, what’s your score? Where do you live?

Also, DirkGently, what matters is your percentile in your state. You need 99% to receive NMSF status.

As to TASP, I received a letter about two/three weeks ago and one again today (I have no idea why). The score cut-off seemed to be quite high when I first received it, as my friend with a 222 did not get a letter, but I don’t know if they are doing a second round of letters for different scores or something like that. If you got a letter, your score should be decently high, but as I do not know the cutoff I cannot give you any tangable data.

I scored a 209 and I live in Florida.

Er, sorry to sound dumb, but what is TASP?

DirkGentley, you will be a National Hispanic Finalist (and Scholar if you have good grades) and will be National Merit Commended. If the Florida threshold drops two points, you will be National Merit Semifinalist (though this is unlikely).

TASP is a selective summer program for juniors: [Telluride Association: Our Programs: For High School Students: Summer Program for Juniors (TASP): General Information](Telluride Association Summer Seminar (TASS) - Telluride Association).

TASP also focuses more on your essays and your ability to put your thoughts on paper rather than your SAT scores/GPA.

Sweet! That is a lot more than I was expecting. lol. Thanks for the information, silverturtle.

Harambee, I just got my Tasp Letter too today! I was really happy b/c I was feeling awful and it made me feel slightly better about myself. Do you think for black people they do it on the basis of National Achievement SF possibility?
