2009 PSAT Scores and Discussion

yea…I got, with a 230, the TASP letter…is it even that prestigious? Is going to it worth it? Are there other letters you get from psat scores?

^YES, it’s very prestigious, mostly because of it’s selectivity. You should get a ton of other letters if you checked yes for the student search service.

I have no clue, all I’ve heard from the TASP thread is that they send the letter out based on certain percentiles. It’s funny how TASP is PSAT spelled backwards.

Yea its probably not for me anyway…I’m more of a math/science kind of person. The TASP seems more liberal artsy.

and do the organizations who use student search service look at the total psat score out of 240 or individual sections or both

o yea and does what major you select in the psat matter to the student serch service people…I chose engineering physics(I don’t even want to do this anymore) but I’m afraid it was a little too specific. So I should’ve probably just selected engineering.

Huh…does anyone know the cutoffs for TASP in the past? I didn’t receive a letter with a 224

@Sray070 - The major you selected might have an impact. But you shouldn’t really worry about it, most of the letters you get from the PSAT are junk and aren’t worth much. Colleges send out the letters just to attract students. AFAIK, it has no how your application is viewed.

From the College board:

[PSAT/NMSQT: Student Search Service](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools)

It doesn’t matter whether or not you got the letter, you can still apply to TASP. Getting the letter doesn’t mean you have a better chance at being selected. Just check [the TASP website](Telluride Association Summer Seminar (TASS) - Telluride Association) if you want to find out more.

Just a guess, but I believe the cutoff is a 225, as I received a letter with a 226. You should definitely apply though. It looks like an incredible opportunity (I will definitely be applying) and, as the previous poster said, you do not have an advantage if you received a letter and the majority of the application is based on your essays.

■■■. Taking MultiVar/LinAlg this year…75 math all because I misread 2 questions. There goes the 5 points I needed to make NMSF…FMFL

Wow you guys have some great scores.
Do you think studying the DH book, will help someone with a score of a little over 160?

Im a sophomore and my score was a 171. is that somewhat decent?

@jollybjolly - I had a 165 sophomore year, but I improved to 200+ junior year. One of the reasons I improved is because of Direct Hits.

@mirandaskye

I jumped more than 30 points from my sophomore year to junior year WITHOUT any preparation. The only difference was that I was used to the time restrictions and had gotten some extra practice in Alg. 2. I also improved 200 points on the SAT from the first time I took it to the second time, simply because I was better used to the format and time restrictions.

So… yes, a 171 is really good for a sophomore, and you’re likely to get into the 200s, especially if you practice.

^100% Agree with the Direct Hits comment. I missed 4 SC questions last year, but this year I only missed one.

I feel like my school is the only school which doesn’t have its results in yet…

My school still hasn’t given us our scores yet either. I asked my guidance counselor and they definitely have them, but I don’t know why they still haven’t given them out yet.

Should a 214 be good enough to qualify in Florida?

So angry at myself… I got no hard questions wrong. Most of the questions I got wrong were the ones labeled ‘easy.’

For example, on the question where t was between 1 and 2 and you had to choose a value in between, I chose 1/2. And yet I got all of the hard math questions right. Stupid mistakes suck. Big time.

Does anyone know how many juniors took the test this year as compared to last year?

Wait, so…silverturtle, did you ever receive your scores? lol the only reason I still hang around this thread is to see what you got haha…

OMG hp236, your son got the same exact score as me lol! Breakdown and everything…(wonders what’s going on)

Sorry, that was rather…late and random, but I felt it too awesome to pass by without comment. :)
