aww too bad. Does it still look good if you are a SemiFinalist or Commended Student?

You will be Commended, not Semifinalist. It doesnāt really make a difference for top schools.

i got a 217 in california and i got that letter lol. i thought the cut off was reported as 218 or something. whatever. does this do any good for college apps?

Commended is probably not a big deal to colleges whose median SAT scores are above 2000 - their median students are therefore quite likely commonly commended. But there are certainly many fine schools that will care about commended. You can also signal your interest when you list your two top schools - and that is also something that many excellent schools care about.

not really balanced, but whatever.

International student in Beijing; I scored a 238. Got a silly math question wrong ^.^ So I donāt know too much about the ālevelsā of awardsā¦ thereās commended, semifinalist, and finalist, right?

Upper 210s and still no commended letter in Texas

I got my letter today.

I got a 219 in California, but I havenāt gotten any letters. I have some friends who did, so Iām assuming 219 didnāt make the cut? :(

I got one letter that just said Iām in the top 50,000, and it just talks about some website and choosing two colleges. But it doesnāt say anything about semifinalists or commended or anything, and I think my friends got notified that they were semifinalists. So if you were supposed to make semifinalist, you had to get two letters, right?

^pretty sure we donāt find that out till august/sept.

I only just got my top 50000 letter like a week ago. (216 in CAā¦ i hope it drops down 2 pts tho itās unlikely :P)

got 181, the AZ cutoff is 184ā¦sadness :/

@tikiman53: so far thereās only one letter, the one you got. Iām 234 in California and thatās all I got.

230 in Texas. Definitely made the cut.

I only got a 206, but Iām international and qualified for the NMQST or whatever itās called. ;)

Being an international actually hurts. The Semifinalist cutoff is the highest- it was 223 last year. Commended is either for the top 50,000 students on the PSAT or anyone who gets a score above 200. Iām not sure.

228, Utah. CR 77 M 73 WS 78ā¦ I just found out I was a finalist today, and my school year ended last week. I remember asking my counselor about it back in April but he said the letters donāt get sent out until May or June, yet I never recieved a letter. I only know Iām a finalist because my school gives out little certificates to people who do well on the PSAT, because I guess itās a big deal in my area.

How does the scholarship work? Do they wait until the finalists have taken the SAT to choose winners? Do I have to apply for the scholarship? Some people are talking about having to go choose two colleges for something related to it, do I have to do that, or did I miss any deadlines? I am confused.

Actually the list for semifinalists does not come out until September. At that point, you get to apply to be a finalist. The letter you got simply means that you are in the top 50,000 kids out of which 34,000 will be selected as semifinalist. Your score is very high and you will easily make the semi cutoff. The remaining 16,000 earned commended status and will not continue in the competition.

Your letter should have given a cutoff date to alert 2 schools of your score. As for the scholarship, I do not think all schools offer it. So take a look at those that interest you and somewhere on their website it will say something like āfor those who designate our college as their first choice, we will award a scholarship of xā They seem to range from $1000-$7500. If you make finalist, there are many private scholarships you can apply for. Google the National Merit website. It gives an explaination.

I got a 214ā¦ in North Carolina

I mean, I was amazed i did so well, while taking the actual PSAT as well as after I got my scores back. Thats because just a year ago (more than a year now) I got an 1820 on the SAT as well as getting a comparable PSAT score (186 I think) Sophomore year.

But what hurts is my state cut-off for semi-finalists. For the last 4 years or so itās been alternating 215, 214, 215, 214ā¦ And if the pattern repeats the cut off will be 215 this year.

And that will hurt.

But, yeah my school handed out certificates for high scores on the test but I think they did it on a 2000+ cut off, because I know someone who scored a 208 who got one. It may actually been on a commended status thing (top 50,000 or so nationally).

224 from Maineā¦ disappointed that my SAT scores werenāt as high as PSAT

229 in Georgia. Hoping I can get at least a 2300 on my SAT.
