katwkittens, did Princeton say what their other costs would be going up by. Their R&B?

Percents are almost meaningless. I want DOLLARS. A 10% increase for a state U charging $10,000 is only $1000, while a 4% increase at a $40,000 school is $1600. Which is more??

“Princeton’s tuition, room and board fees will increase 3.3 percent for the 2010-11 academic year, from $47,020 to $48,580.” From The Daily Princetonian

So if the tuition increase is $1300 and total increase is $47020 to $48580 which is $1560 then R & B increase is $260? Both from princeton sources.

So $ total for barrons is $1560.

Kat

Want to add $$ to the list? There is $ increase and totals plus totals with all fees.

Singersmom - I think there is a mistake in the article talking about increase in Rice’s costs. The total fees are under $1000 - so even with that included, the total room, board, fees and tuition is under $45,800… I think the guy who wrote the article transposed these digits and wrote $48,500, when it should be $45,800!!! Big difference. I have emailed him.

Rice tuition for 2010-2011 is $33,120, room and board is $11,750, and fees were $628 last year, plus $475 for O-week - so $46,000 at the most…

Although he declared higher education an important part of the state’s economic recovery and recommended few new funding reductions to public universities, Gov. Bob McDonnell signaled Wednesday that he supports deep cuts proposed by his predecessor.

Deputy Secretary of Finance Craig Burns confirmed that McDonnell’s proposed budget amendments would leave intact former Gov. Tim Kaine’s funding cuts to public institutions, as well as a controversial plan to take about 5 percent of mandatory student fees paid to universities to help offset the massive state budget shortfall.

Taking student fee money to fund state operations, if approved by the legislature, would be unprecedented, and student services, as well as the overall financial health of public universities could suffer.

“In effect, student fee money collected for a specific purpose on campus is being redirected to pave roads, operate state parks, underwrite the operation of state government, etc.,” Tech spokesman Larry Hincker wrote in an e-mail Wednesday. “Does this foretell state policy changes for the future?”

RICE UNIVERSITY CORRECTED INFO now updated on the website:
Rice University’s undergraduate tuition for 2010-11 will be $33,120 – an increase of 5.4 percent or $1,690 over last fall’s. The university will also increase its financial aid budget about 16 percent and continue to honor financial aid policies intended to make a Rice education accessible to qualified students from all economic backgrounds.
“Last year we raised our no-loan threshold and lowered our four-year cap on student loans to help keep a Rice education affordable for students when many families were struggling during the prolonged economic downturn,” President David Leebron said. “Rice University remains committed to a need-blind approach to admission that benefits our community and our nation by creating a student body from diverse backgrounds and circumstances.”

Under an aid enhancement instituted last year, freshmen entering Rice this fall who qualify for need-based aid and whose family annual income is $80,000 or less will NOT be required to take out loans to pay for their education.

The university will also continue to honor the $10,000 cap on loans in financial aid packages for need-eligible incoming freshmen for their four undergraduate years.
Room and board for 2010-11 will increase $520 to $11,750. The total charge for entering students, including tuition, fees, and room and board, will be close to $45,500.
