2010 Discovery Weekend!

Hello everybody! :)

I just got my invite today to the discovery weekend and I am seriously really excited to go! :D Not really liking how I'll have to miss two days of school (:p no not because I'm that nerdy but because 2 days can really make a person fall behind in my school) but I'm still definitely going. Anyone else on CC get the invite yet and plan on going?

I got mine yesterday too and plan on going. It got it right after I mailed my application for Amherst’s Open House…which is the same weekend (well, the date I chose was the same weekend). Hopefully I can change the Amherst date so that I can have a chance of going to both.

I’m going! Is it going to help our chances?

Youch! Wustl sends me a lot of stuff but I haven’t gotten one lol. Do they pay for the trip? And can someone PM me the website application if it’s available online? Thanks a ton guys ! :]

Nevermind. Googled it and they don’t pay for your trip. No longer interested lol.

^ They pay for some people’s trips. It’s invitation only, so there’s no application.

^^ If they paid for you to go, I assume your chances are higher since they clearly have interest in you. If you’re going on your own, I still think that your chances are higher since you’re showing interest.

You should go if you can swing it at all. This is a very special weekend and I’m so glad my son went. And yes, we paid for it. This was the weekend that absolutely convinced my son that WUSTL was his top choice.

At first, he was reluctant. But, while he was there, he texted me, “WUSTL is awesome.” was all he wrote. And when all the acceptances came in, there was no need to convince him otherwise; he was going to WUSTL. And now, those DW memories and all he has learned about WUSTL through their website, mailings, FB, etc he can’t wait. He leaves in a few weeks.

What other schools did your son get accepted to?

I’m taking the train to St. Louis from the Chicago Union station with a couple of friends for this. Can anyone fill me in on how safe this is? It’s a 6ish hour long trip and we’ve never traveled this far on our own, let alone on a train.

My son was invited to Discovery Weekend 2010 and plans to go. For students who have attended past Discovery Weekends and/or parents whose kids went… should I go with him? Do many parents go? Or is this something he should really attend on his own? It seems like it’s a pretty busy weekend for the kids – not sure I should really be there? Advice, please?

No. I went to Discovery Weekend last year and the students who brought their parents didn’t have half the fun we had (and I promise I did NOTHING that my mom wouldn’t approve of). Students without parents got to hang out more with other students, attend the events they wanted to attend instead of what their parents attended, do what they wanted, explore campus, etc. I recommend not bringing your parents, or at least avoiding them whilst there. Plus, parents have a view of the campus - positive or negative. It is always better if the student starts out by forming his or her own opinions.

Im going! Got my application sometime during the summer, registered, and they sent me like a “your registration is confirmed” booklet, but my father lost it. does anyone remember what that packet was about?

So does anyone know if WashU likes demonstrated interest? Especially since they don’t have extra essays for their application.

I hear they hate it.

Really? Guess I better not apply then, I’ve shown a bunch of it. They’ll reject me for sure!
