Just got my letter inviting me to Discovery weekend!
Who else is going?

ME!!!!! WOOT, do any of you guys know of any other good unis doing the same thing? Thanks!

I got an invitation also.

I was just wondering about how many of these invitations washu sends out. It says "special invitation" and "space limited" but i dont really know whether its true or just used to entice students.

Does getting invited and going to the discovery weekend reflect any chance of acceptance. I didnt get the washu paid weekend, i still have to pay 45 bucks and the airfare.

I do plan on attending and this visit will probably decided whether i want to ED WashU or not.

How many did receive the offre for paid weekend trip? My kid has been offered a paid trip.

When is discovery weekend?

Last Thursday in Sept through Sunday.

I'm going too! It'll be fun to meet everyone :)

I have a question. So I attended the high school summer scholars program at washu this summer and i had an amazing time. Now I am really interested in the school, but since I did not get an invite for discovery weekend, does that mean that washu is not interested in me?!?!?!?

manjaap,
I see in one of your previous posts that you're Asian (Indian). Discovery weekend is targeted primarily at URM's and possibly low income and first generation students. So, unless you fall into one of these other categories, that might explain why you didn't receive an invitation. Sometimes I think it's hard to predict who they will invite and why as they really don't advertise their criteria.

i dont know about that, im chinese so that means im not URM and my family is middle class and both of my parents went to college and my mom went to Beijing University. I think discovery weekend is more based on interest and its designed to win people who are borderline over to apply come fall. thats just my 2 cents but i really have no clue though.

Thanks for your input Magnus, it's quite a mystery who they choose and why. I know that along with being a URM, my D listed WUSTL as one of her two schools for NM and has also sent them her SAT scores. Location could also be a factor as we live on the west coast, so a trip to St. Louis before applying would be unlikely without the Discovery weekend offer. I guess it's just one more "unknown" of the application process.

I have no idea why they sent me one

I live in Georgia (my school has sent people there before), im an international, and I'm asian (so im not URM). But i guess it's cause I sent in my preapp sheet early? who knows??

I think I might go too =] sounds interesting!

manjaap,
I've heard somewhere that colleges send out letters/invitations/etc to everyone on a certain list they receive from somewhere and the colleges themselves don't even know who exactly is on that list. So perhaps, for some reason unknown, you were not placed on the list? Like everyone else, I can only offer a guess, but I can understand how you feel. If, however, you really want to go to Discovery Weekend, I'm sure they have the information on their website.

jenuinex26,
I live in GA too! completely irrelevant and pointless, but oh well =P

by the way, this is probably a really dumb question, but what does URM mean?

URM = Under Represented Minority

Does anybody know around how many people usually go to this? Are there a lot of people who are invited?

coffeebean: haha awesome! what part of GA are you from?

thanks magnus...now the posts make that much more sense :p

jenuinex: i live near atlanta, more specifically marietta. what about you?
...i hope there are no stalkers on cc ;)

Yeah, I also am a upper-middle class Chinese male. Far from UDM lol :/

does anybody know how many people usually go to this?

coffeebean: lol well if there are any .. i hope they don't come find me .. i live in savannah .. sigh* everybody around here only wants to go to UGA

Yeah, I'm going to this. I'm white, so I'm a bit baffled as to why I received an invite, but I look forward to visiting St. Louis.

If you are the first in your immediated family to seek a 4 year degree ("frist generation") then you included in the URM category.
