2011 Applicants: Where are you applying?

Its too far for me. My parents won’t let me apply to any schools farther than CT (I live in NH).

Most people interested in BS are from the North East. You can also figure that from the many people here on CC. Lawrenceville is a little far off as parents prefer a manageable distance for school visits.

I applied to these 7 and got in. It eventually came down to St. Paul’s and Andover. I did a revisit, and Andover provided transportation from St. Paul’s to their campus, and from the Andover campus to Logan. I chose Andover, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I wasn’t the nerdy type, and there are things I dislike about the school, but the people and experience is unbeatable. I had to withdraw senior year due to a simply ridiculous disciplinary reason, and that screwed up my college career etc. Even though I got kicked out, I still love the school and would not hesitate in sending my kids there. I’m amidst college app complications right now, but good memories at the Big Blue.

In order of preference 4 years ago:

adubbs, did you get into all 7? What a great accomplishment. I don’t see it happening today that way, but I could be wrong. What’s the ridiculous disciplinary reason?
It might be helpful for us to know so our kids can avoid similar mistakes. thx

I know this is a little off topic what what does pm mean

Applying for 2011 as a 10th grader. I think I’ll have to repeat 9th. Not very sure.

EDIT: Could anyone explain this applying process thingy? It’s my first time applying to any school, be it boarding, private, or public. I understand there’s a list of requirements in each website which I have to fulfill, one of which is taking those… English measuring tests? SAT? I’ve never thought much about them before, and the general understanding I had of them was of an international test used to measure your English and/or Math (?). I’m from another country, so that means I’m going to be an international student-to-be… hopefully. That has to change something, no?
Also, this interview thingy sounds scary. Do they ask you formal questions? Do I have to travel all the way from my country to United States to take these Interviews?

… This is nerve-wracking. I’m pretty worried about my English and messing-up and not being accepted to any school.

In no particular order
Deerfield
Choate
Hotchkiss
Sps
St georges

redbluegoldgreen, thanks for that and yes I did and I’m sure it can still happen today. As long as kids have decent grades and manage to stand out during the admissions process it won’t be hard. Being able to stay away from cliched essay topics and to express a true passion is what all institutions are looking for. Presenting your application neatly and formally also helps a lot. I’m an international student so I guess that adds to it.

msg me if you want to know about what happened, I’d rather not discuss it here.

Andover
Exeter
Saint Paul’s

I’m still deciding on what other schools to pursue, and am hoping to enroll as a repeat junior.
Any suggestions?

^You may have picked the 3 toughest schools relative to admission statistics.

I thought as much, and then my parents decided these three schools are the best to go for, only because they’re the closest to home overall (with Andover being the absolute nearest.)
Eh, well now I’m even more excited, haha. :stuck_out_tongue:
Personally, I’ve got all hopes pinned on Andover. I am just in love with the atmosphere there.

Just wondering: For everyone on here, why did they choose the schools they did? Academics, music, atmosphere, art, etc…? I’m curious. Lots of people can choose the same institution for very different reasons:D

Comm-when you parents said best for you…in what context? If you look over the other threads you will see that a lot of people thought as your parents did but realized that you need to consider many variables. Distance is not always the best predictor of fit or need for the student. Trust me–my d is about 900 miles away. She had many choices and chose a school was really her, though initially the school was not even on our radar. Since you are in the area, visit a mixture of school before you become dead set on any one. Be open and ask your parents to do the same.

IMHO

Well, I’m an only child and they don’t want me to be too, too far away. I suppose it’s because I am an only child:) The other thing is, I actually looked into two other schools; Milton and Northfield Mount Hermon- and it just didn’t work out for me. I’m currently checking out Deerfield and Hotchkiss. I’m still partial to Andover, however, but I should pay the others a visit.
Where is your daughter at? Just curious:)

Comm-my d is at DA. We considered many places, big and smaller. She is one of the “strange” kids that selected DA over Exeter and places like NMH, L’ville & Miss Porter’s.

She is an only child, only grandchild and the only great grandchild. So it is difficult for all of us here to be without her only a daily basis. Plus she was homeschooled for 3 years with lots of support from her family in terms of school work. She traveled with family to support her studies and did museums and field trips.

I just suggest for you to be open and self-reflective. One school did not select her, (Loomis) and I thank them for being honest with us that they were not the best fit for her her though my daughter had it listed as number 2.

IMHO- and my 3 cents :-).

unsolicited advice from a parent of two bs kids: find a school with 50+% admissions rate to add to your list. Visit and fall in love with at least one safety school. Minimize your potential disappointments when the March mail arrives!

It could be the best $50 your parents spend!

the madeira school, andover and exeter.

Baseballmom is 100% right.

My kids are recent grads of Hotchkiss and Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA. Both had a good experience and are fiercely loyal to their schools.

Hotchkiss can be a grind/very competitive. Recent Hotchkiss grads at Stanford (soph) and Georgetown (junior) report course load in college is “much easier”.

Concord and Andover as 9th grade
