2011 RSI Discussion

umm my math teacher rec isn’t exactly sub-par… we get along 'cause I coach mathcounts at school and we’re both math crazy. it’s just that she only knows me for 3 months… and i don’t exactly pay attention in her class because I already know the material (i was forced into ap calc, long story)… she seems to understand though. the letter just isn’t as sincere as the one my bio teacher wrote, who has known me for 3 years. it was more like a reiteration of my resume with some fluff.

my counselor knows me for 3 years also. she taught me english for my freshman year. I guess her perspective would be different since she knows more about my struggles with english (not a native speaker) and how hard i work rather than my science/math fluff.

i didn’t know that they specifically stated “no supplementary materials” this year… if they didn’t do that last year, i would guess they really mean it.

umm i just e-mailed maite and she said we can a max of 3 recs, so i guess that settles it.

S has submitted his application with SAT and PSAT score reports copied from the copy received from CB. Included in the package was a sealed transcript from his school. However, the school transcript does not have SAT and PSAT scores. How does he send official score reports to CEE?

Thank you for your suggestions.

@dragonboy - what he has done is enough… copies are all they want.

sMITten: Thanks for your reply. On the form, it says they need certified copies of score reports from school counselor. Have you done it before?

When I applied last year, I didn’t include my PSAT because it was on my transcript, but they wanted a copy anyway… and they said that a copy of my copy was fine, which is what I sent in this year. I printed off my SAT2 from the CB website, as I never received a paper copy score. There isn’t more that I can give them, so I’m sure you will be fine.

Does anyone know if the application fee has to be paid as a check? Or can we use cash?

@asimpleuser i’m pretty sure a check can be used

would it be a disadvantage for me to mention tasp in my essay?

@Lovex: I don’t really know about it being a disadvantage, but if you’re worried about it (and it’s not a highly important part of the essay), just cut it out–when you only have three pages to work with, you should make every word count, and you likely don’t want to spend some of those words discussing a different program (unless you have some prior involvement with that program, in which case discuss away).

well i found out about rsi through tasp and that’s the only reason i’m mentioning it in my last essay question

I would say that’s absolutely fine.

sorry i’m asking so many questions but how do i print my psat & sat scores?

open the page up and file-print on your web browser…if that doesn’t work, take a screenshot and print that (at least, I think that’s what your asking; I don’t actually know if there’s some particular way that scores are supposed to be submitted).

i got my sat scores printed but idk how to get my psat scores printed. i can’t get to a page with all my scores on it; i can just get to a page with JUST my cr score and a page with JUST my math score, etc

@momo899: From what you’ve said from your posts, a counselor rec could be a consideration. If your counselor could speak to your dedication to science (especially as a non-native speaker) then I can see that being looked upon favorably. A lot of people will do math teacher, science teacher, mentor/professor rec to make their three. However, just use your judgement and try to avoid superfluous material because that may not end up in your favor.

@LovexLight: Do you still have the long paper hard copy thingy with the three columns in blue, green and yellow for your PSATs? I just copied the top part of that.

You all have sent me lots and lots and lots of wonderful private messages and sorry I haven’t responded to all of them right away :frowning:
But I will plow through them this weekend, and if you sent something, can you please not send multiple reminders to me that you did? I learned that CC has an inbox capacity and other people with questions may be blocked from asking. :P

Haha. I was on this thread over winter break and saw all the panicking/score comparing and I was like, nope, not gonna read this till I’m done with my application.

Maybe I should have, cause I didn’t find out about the deadline extension until now… I spent 20 dollars on overnight shipping I WANT A REFUND. Plus I forgot my AP scores, haha.

So who is this enigma (ha ha irony)… I am from Arizona as well, and whichever poster (notsoingenious? i need sleep…) it was with the million APs, you are going to represent AZ and not me. So way to go. Good job :)

Oh also. I picked Math/Cryptography and Biology/Oceanography… It bothered me that there wasn’t a list of options to choose from.

Ah, yes, that was me. As optimistically as I try to look at the outcomes of life, I’m not too sure of your statement of how I’ll be the one representing Arizona this year.

First, don’t disregard yourself on the process. I’m sure your application was awesome, just like many of the other applications this year. Secondly, I already know of three other good Arizona applicants that might have as good of a chance as you and I might. Finally, I doubt RSI even discriminates between states. If I had to guess, Arizona probably hasn’t been represented in a while. Maybe this is Arizona’s year. Maybe not.

Enigma was someone who applied to RSI last year with some pretty good achievements. He himself was surprised that he was rejected, but hey, RSI’s a “crapshoot,” as it’s been said oh-so-many times. It really is a mixture of your stats and specs with essays. Even though all of the alumni I’ve spoken to had… nothing short of a spectacular application, I’m sure they were chosen above the others who had similar statistics because of the passion they showed in their essays.

Truly, it’d be wonderful if all of us could make it, but the world doesn’t work in such ways. Sincerely, I wish you luck. If you get in and I don’t, I’ll still be pleased that we have an Arizona representative this year. :)

Of course, optimistically speaking, I’ll see you on the MIT campus in 5 months. ;)

Well, we did have someone from Arizona last year–though I highly doubt that will have any bearing on this year’s admissions. It should be noted, though, that there is some level of organization by state–California and New York are significantly more selective than the rest of the county, though I’m fairly certain that three students were taken from each (there might have been 4 from Cali, I’m not entirely sure). The reasoning on the NY/Cali thing is that, though the CEE could fill an entire RSI with kids from either of those states (this might be an exaggeration, but it’s what was told to me), it’d be a lot less interesting to have everyone from the same state. On the matter of taking 2 from Arizona, though–it’s in no way out of the realm of possibility. We had two kids from the same public high school in CT last year, two from Jersey, 3 or 4 from Texas and I think there might have been more than one from Michigan (but I might be making that last one up). So while you do have a geographic distribution, there is still a fair amount of overlap.

@NotsoProdigious, I’ll keep my fingers crossed! In the meantime, what school do you go to? I’m comparing you to all the people I know, but no matches are coming up…

Also, enigma’s real name wouldn’t be rahul mitra by any chance would it.
