2011 RSI Discussion

Hi guys, I’m kind of freaking out a bit right now. In my application, I said that I intended to send the research project that I’m currently working on to Intel and Siemens this year, but I just realized that the Intel and Siemens rules only allow for one project submission per year. I don’t want RSI to think that my current project will compete with my hypothetical RSI projectf for submission, because I would probably send my RSI one over my current one. Would this hurt my chances? Should I call and clarify, or should I not bother?

@000000: I don’t think it will hurt your chances. RSI likes to see strong past research projects, and they’ll understand that you are just looking to enter these competitions next year. Don’t worry about it. :)

@000000: Right, so RSI kids do Siemens/Intel with their RSI projects, but that’s not exactly affiliated with RSI. More like post-RSI. So in other words, the RSI admissions people themselves don’t care whether you’ll eventually do those with your project or not. (Of course they care, they love to see RSI kids do well, I’m just saying it’ll have no bearing on your admission. Rather, it’d be a great plus for you.)

what public school in CT was this? im from a ct…

As far as I know, people that enter Intel or Siemens generally do so with projects they worked on before RSI. There isn’t enough time to fully flesh out a project in 4-5 weeks, and even given a couple months afterwards, it’s a stretch.

Like buzzer11 said, RSI will give you an opportunity to work on a scientific project and the paper template you use at RSI pretty much meets all the requirements for Siemens/Intel. I would say RSI encourages science fair participation, but doing well in competitions shouldn’t be the main reason for why you want to go to RSI. Entering science fairs can be a good experience, and RSI gives many people the opportunity to have a project, which they might not have had before.

Frequently, many people in biology or lab-intensive fields enter their pre-RSI projects because they’ve spent a lot more time on them. But there are people who have done biology projects at RSI and done well in Intel and Siemens. People in more theory-based fields, like math, physics or even comp sci, tend to enter their RSI projects. I entered my RSI physics project, but I kept in touch with my mentor by email and worked on it after RSI as well.

And regarding geographic distribution by states - at RSI, even those from traditionally less represented states were just as qualified as those of us from more competitive states. Big picture - you need to be strong and shine at the national level.

Mmm, it’s kind of nice to know that there was a kid from Arizona last year. Would be nice to meet him/her sometime.

So how many states do you think were not represented?

@paronomasia: Mmm, I don’t know the identity of Engima. I don’t know what part of the state he’s from either. It’s not a surprise that you can’t match me with anyone, seeing how Arizona is an immense state. Do you live around central Phoenix?

Hey guys,

I’ve been editing my app and noticed an overuse of the word science. Is there a synonym that you guys have been using? Thanks.

@prodigious, haha, duh, don’t make fun of me… Um, I go to Corona del Sol in Tempe, where my brain cells thrive on the moldy air. OH GOD personal info on the internets.

@nizmo: “methodical study of the material world.” LOL.

Ah, Corona? I’ve actually heard of it. I’m actually not too far off Tempe, seeing how I live in Scottsdale. I usually go to ASU once or twice a week depending on which extracurricular event I have there. I go to BASIS, if you’ve heard about it.

Time to go bang my head on the keyboard for a couple more hours and see what comes out. Probably something along the lines of, “sefhuigbjdfgsdfnjkewthuifenjksdfnjk,” but hey, with some editing, that might look presentable. :3

My main focus is environmental engineering…is that even an acceptable research field? I know it’s after the fact, but I’d still like to know.

i have a 780 sat II in both math 2 and chemistry but i have a 610 in latin
should i include my math and chemistry sat II score and if i do i need to send the collegeboard’s unofficial score report which shows the 610?

@harvard76 OMG SAME BOAT ONLY 6 DAYS LATER :(

i’m freaking out here: we need to INCLUDE an unofficial transcript and have our school send an OFFICIAL transcript to arrive by Friday??

I don’t think the school sends anything, but I could be wrong.

“Please include an unofficial score report with your application and have your school send certified test scores with your transcript.”

wow. i am so screwed.

i don’t think your school HAS to send anything, i mean my school just printed out some stuff and made me include it in my application envelope.

btw when do we get the results again?

can anyone who has been to rsi confirm if our school has to send the official transcripts and stuff?

thanks

I’m really worried that there will be no envi-engineering research opportunities at RSI, so my application will be trashed to begin with…can someone who attended RSI tell me what the reality of my situation is?
