Each nation has an agency which chooses its applicants. CEE does not set the deadlines for other nations’ agencies.

^ Interesting…thanks for the reply. So then does CEE still choose who they accept or is that done by the agencies?

Each country, as far as I know, has a different application procedure. For example, the students from Sweden won their spots in science fairs (well, one of them definitely did), while the students from China were selected from the pool of applicants to RSI-Shanghai (I think that’s the city, anyways), and those from Australia and Spain applied through separate, multi-year programs in their respective countries.

Also, I don’t know for sure whether the CEE gets to choose, but I believe that they don’t–the organizations choose, then the selected students write applications (even though they know they’re already in–the app is meant to help place them with mentors). However, I haven’t discussed this with anyone in months and my memory is very likely flukey.

Ah that would explain last year… a student from Sweden said he was accepted and hadn’t even applied. I thought he was a ■■■■■, but it seems to follow your story.
Thanks.

I’m trying desperately not to count down the days until decisions are released–at this point, it looks like getting into RSI is a combination of an infinite number of factors, all of which essentially turn it into a crapshoot. I’ve decided there’s nothing more I can do, so I’m not going to stress too much about it. (On the plus side, a bunch of my senior friends get their MIT letters around the same time, so if we all get rejected, we can have one great big reject party).

I read it as a sort of census question as well–I just gave an honest answer about how I was searching for summer science programs in August and found their website. I think I got an email from RSI after the PSATs too, so I mentioned that. It really wasn’t a question that required a novel-length response, and I stopped trying to guess the admissions committee’s intent after the first essay I wrote, otherwise I would have gone 'round the twist.

If I got into RSI…I’d cry tears of joy. I probably wouldn’t stop screaming for hours. Then I’d do my chem homework, 'cause, you know, that’s how I get my kicks.

All other summer plans are quite off if I get into RSI (barring a music festival in France, but that’s after the program ends anyways).

Neither of my children were “recruited” for RSI at all. An internet search for summer programs turned up RSI in 2002, and the oldest attended in 2003. He was the first student at his school to apply. Since then his brother and another student from their high school have gone to RSI.

I believe greenbean is correct on the international selection process.

@portia0105: I’m in the same situation as you. I check my mailbox everyday after school, even though I already know that the decisions wouldn’t be released so early. I’ve already read all of the previous years’ threads, and I think I’ve exhausted Google with my searches of RSI. Also, my answer to the last question was one sentence. Besides, I couldn’t afford anymore space, even after I minimized the margins and made it 11 font. D: (10 font is just mean to the readers.)

If we both get into RSI, we should definitely have a webcam party while you do Chemistry homework and I do Math homework. Er… don’t judge?

I think I’ve already told everyone at my school that if I got in, I’d do something drastic, like burn down a tree, or burn down the school, or burn down a 10th grader, or burn down all three, but I don’t think my artistic use of polysyndeton and sarcasm is going to increase my chances.

Frankly though, I’d probably yell it all day at school while running down the halls like a maniac. ^^

So, I have a few questions for those who’ve gone to RSI. My son applied and is waiting the decision like everyone else. In the meantime, he has an offer from his physics professor at the local Univ. to do research this summer, perhaps even paid. This could be an ongoing thing, into next school year, and it sounds very interesting to him. (Optics) His two areas of interest for RSI were optics and statistics but I’m not hearing mention of either of these areas of study.

My question would be, is RSI so amazing that if my son somehow got into RSI, he should go automatically? (Of course, there’s the cost of the flight that we have to come up with somehow) Could local research with a professor who knows you and really likes you possibly be equal to the RSI experience? Did any of you do research locally with a great college professor? How did that compare to RSI? Were there any negatives to RSI?

My son’s never been away from home for an extended period of time and something like RSI would be a great way to prepare for college. He hasn’t applied to any other summer programs yet, so RSI’s the only one on the table right now.

My question would be, is RSI so amazing that if my son somehow got into RSI, he should go automatically?
- If science/research is his passion, and is really interested in conducting research, then RSI is arguably the best program in the nation and well worth the cost of the flight.

Could local research with a professor who knows you and really likes you possibly be equal to the RSI experience?
Depends on the professor. I’ve done summer research for the last two summers before applying to RSI this year. From what I’ve heard, is that since you are dispensing your summer JUST for this program (along with structured learning), you come out with a tremendous experience. The people/professors really add on to it.

Did any of you do research locally with a great college professor?
Three different positions (two of which I am published in right now)

Can’t answer your last two questions, but here is just my thoughts on your situation.

yeahh…
I honestly think that its basically impossible for me to get into RSI, now that Im looking at all of you super pro people in this thread
but good luck to everyone ayways! I really REALLY hope i make MITES :p

Just wondering if I should contact CEE so that I can add my AMC and SAT scores, or probably not worth doing at this point? They are both good scores, but not sure if they are needed on the application.

I did find out that it is too late… they are scattering the applications on the dart board currently.

How do you know your AMC score already?

I compared my answers to the answer sheet at the end of the exam.

7yearman,

Thanks for the feedback. Do you know anyone who’s gone to RSI? Also, have you applied to other summer programs? I know RSI is extremely hard to get into and it’s highly unlikely my son will get in but he doesn’t know about too many other programs besides Ross (didn’t want to apply). There’s one at Texas Tech that sounded interesting.

SMITen, I think you should contact them and ask about adding your scores…or do you think that would seem out of place or pushy? My son’s AMC 12A was ok (99), might qualify him for AIME (he started math competitions last year and did AIME but that’s as far as he went) but he’s going to take 12B, too.

I know that when I was planning on applying to RSI, I knew very few people who got in. Therefore, I had a more difficult time structuring my application.
I think that for future applicants, we should make a results thread. That way we can pass our experiences and lessons forward.

Well, I think a lot of the alumni have come this year to help us with our applications. Do you mean that we should compile a results thread that would continue over the years?

And by my estimations, 21 ~ 30 days until we get the results back. I keep on thinking I’m going to get in, before I realize that I won’t have anything to do over the summer if I don’t start applying for other programs. D:

I’ll be applying for next year, but I have no research experience whatsoever. I have until winter to change that. Any recommendations on how to get further involved? Also, how far into physics and math courses are you applicants?

so ive sent an email about updates on awards to RSI. And they have not sent any response email. Does this mean that they do not take a look at it?
