2011 RSI Discussion

So tad problem, I applied and sent via Express Mail, overnight. The package actually got there 3 days late, so I’m kind of scared they may have rejected the application all together :(, although there was postmark prior to the deadline.

^ they already gave us an extra week… so were you late on the extension or the original date?

Well, what happened was I sent it out on January 22 via Express Mail. USPS said it would get there by Friday, the 24th, but due to some unforeseen delay, it ended up getting there on the following Monday.

Never ever ever send anything of importance or containing time sensitive documents via the us government postal service should you need it to arrive timely. Generally, they have…in my experience…a 30% fail rate. Christmas I sent things across the country two day express…some arrived …some were one week late. You must send it UPS…guaranteed and tracked, traceable. Worth a little extra $. Sorry about that, but live and learn. Son’s RSI app was sent UPS.

Also, the original due date was the 14th… the extended date was the 21st, so when you sent it out on the 22nd, it was already too late. I’m not looking at January’s calendar though to double check.

dvkvys,

Did you get a confirmation from them? My son got a confirmation on the day the apps were due. That would probably tell you whether or not they will be reviewing your app.

Well if the USABO open exam has anything to do with RSI decisions… those have been moved back from 3/4 to 3/9.

really the only confirmation they give you is the self-stamped post card. other than that unless you have UPS tracker there is no way of knowing.

Ack sorry, I got my dates confused. I did send it before the 21st I can assure you that. It got there the following Monday, and I guess you’re right…live and learn. I didn’t do the postcard, however, when I emailed the CEE, I was told that so long as I have the postmark, I’d be alright…

sMITten:I believe USABO is another CEE program, though not affiliated with RSI.

^ I realize they aren’t officially linked, but not sure if there is any “behind the scenes” connection. Someone on another thread brought up the possibility of them checking USABO scores before making final RSI decisions. I don’t think this is likely, but…

Harvard,

My son didn’t do the postcard but he did get an email confirming they had received the application on time.

As long as the postmark is on time, you should be fine.

Today is the anniversary of when the notifications from last year were postmarked… I really do wonder whether they’ll send it out a couple weeks earlier if they happened to finish early…

Did everyone who sent in an application receive an e-mail confirmation? My son did not and we sent it in early. Never did the post card. So, did anyone else get an e-mail confirmation from RSI stating they receive the application?

^ I didn’t get an email response, nor the postcard. I’d just assume they’ve read it and taken action…
Out of curiosity though, do they send us a letter or email, if we are accepted?

^they send a snail mail letter either way.

Maybe I am wrong about getting an email. I just rememeber thinking I knew they had gotten the application by some acknowledgement. I thought it was an email but I could be wrong. It’t totally unimportant anyways. There’s still a slim to none chance for my son to be admitted anyways. :-)

The chance for most people is slim-to-none, but out of the ~25 people who post on this thread, one of us will (probabilistically speaking) get in. That should make it more real that while it is very, very, very difficult to get in, it can definitely happen.

From past years, usually one or two avid cc posters are admitted into RSI. Some years, its been one person, but some years its been more than three. Last year, I think 4 or so frequent posters got in from the cc forums.

Hopefully, we’ll be lucky this year. :)

Same thing happened to me - no formal receipt of my application. But, when my mother checked her bank balance, she saw that RSI had withdrawn the application fee, so it’s safe to assume they got it. Maybe ask your parents to check that?
