2012-2013 Med school applicants and their parents

Thanks katw, curm and entomom. D has already sent LOIs to the schools where she is waitlisted. Now she is faced with the prospect of a gap year. May be it will not be that bad. But we are not giving up hope yet.

QuietThinker,
I didn’t realize that you have a child on WLs. Where is she on WLs?

And, you have a younger D starting college, right?

Quietthinker, I realize you sent me a message and I think some on this board might be able to help with possible suggestions. If you want to pm some of us where she is waitlisted that would be a start. My son was taken off waitlists but ended up turning them down when one of his first acceptance continued to up the scholie money.

And yes M2K the offers were by phone (both cell and home phone) and by email. No snail mails. The snail mail just confirmed his acceptance of the offers and the negotiated amounts and terms. I might have son give them a heads up about how later the scholie was.

Kat

This one SOM seems stuck in “the old ways”. Everything is done by snail mail…secondaries, payment by check, acceptances, and now we learn, scholarship offers.

I have heard that WL acceptances come by phone, though. Maybe to get an immediate feel for whether the person will accept the spot.

Two of son’s SOMs offered merit awards, that was nice.

My son’s med school awarded him a half-tuition scholarship yesterday. A very nice surprise since obviously he’s already chosen to go there. I guess it had been previously awarded to someone else who has since declined or it’s from a new source of money that has just been able to be awarded.

Either way…we’re happy.

6 completed apps (bad boy!!), but 3 interviews, 3 acceptances, 3 merit offers…not bad in the end.

That was my daughter’s experience. We got the impression from a couple of schools that they were not going to make the offer formally unless they were quite sure that you would accept.

Congrats M2CK’s son and M2CK’s bank account!

Someone told me a couple of years ago that UT Southwest called someone 2 days before start of college. Fortunately, that kid had no other choices to give up or rethink.

Congrats to M2CK’s S.

Texaspg, UTSW builds its class differently than UT-Houston. The former heavily relies on prematch offers but the latter does not.

I also heard UT-Houston is "going up ". Its location (being close to the Texas medical center) may be a factor. UTSW has a “campus” (not as nice as a typical college campus though) but it is close to the railway and downtown.

Congratulations to m2ck and son, frosting on the cake!

thanks! :)

Congrats, m2ck! That’s great news!

Wow, m2ck, congrats!

We were traveling and got the USA today for Mon or Tues and the front page story was about student debt (1.1 TRILLION). They followed a few sad cases with kids so burdened that they are unable to get married, save for a house, etc… It’s good to hear that there are positive news for some students.

Congrats to M2CK’s S.

This is great and very rare!
We are footing the whole bill, but D. is exceptionally happy with her program, apparently the average Step 1 score in her class is very high (so far) and it all seems to worth to pay for one of the most expansive SOM. she had only one Merit award at another SOM, but it was so small that she basically ignored the offer.

and won’t that number only get higher with the newly doubled interest rate for student loans?

^^the newly double interests rate only applies to SUBSIDIZED federal loans–and med students haven’t been eligible for those since 2011. Unsub loans were already at 6.8%.

WOWmom, is right, when they dropped the undergrad Staffords to 3%+, the grad students were 6.8%. All the hue & cry about an undergrad subsidized Stafford that, I believe, maxes out at $8000+/- annually, but no mention of $40k+ Staffords for grad students.

Isn’t the bulk of the 1.1 trillion undergraduate debt?

Congratulations and best wishes to M2CK’s son!

Adding my congratulations to the M2CK family. Fantastic news–and all the sweeter since it was unexpected! Enjoy your celebration!

"and won’t that number only get higher with the newly doubled interest rate for student loans? "
-Not for us. We have decided from the very beginning that gov. loans are very expansive option, did not take a single one and have no plans to use them.

We have taken advantage of federal and school loans for med school. My family is very grateful they exist. They have provided and continue to provide options that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.
