Ditto. D would not be a doctor if she had not been able to take advantage of federal and school loans. After one year of residency, the school loans have been paid. There is a LARGE amount still to be paid in federal loans. She pays a monthly amount (income based) and looks forward to the day she is loan free.

Adding my congratulations to all with recent good news. :)

Late to the news Mom2Ck!!! Big Congrats to your son…nice to see those $$ figures!!! Truly is icing on the cake…and it has made a difference for my son as well.

And a second on those school loans, necessary for sure. As I am unable to contribute any finance-wise the boy is on his own. So between the scholarship money and the loan money he is able to attend. And his loan money is much smaller than it could have been had he chosen from his other acceptances. Tons more…

He understood somewhat how the COA can really vary by where you attend but now halfway through he REALLY sees the difference especially where some of his other buddies are attending in high COL areas. The difference is resulting in 10’s of thousands in just rent alone.

Another hurdle jumped. Step 2 score is in. She did a handful+ points better than her Step 1. Which is exactly what she had set as a goal…so, being her, she’s mildly disappointed. lol

She had literally said “My goal is to make a few points better than Step1.” After the test she was concerned about her performance. Test results come in exactly where she had said she wanted. “Mildly disappointed.”

WTH? Stop moving the bar!!

To all y’all. Sometimes good enough is, in fact, good enough.

^My step 1 goal was to be better than the national mean (like…seriously…being better than most med students is sufficient in my mind!). I achieved it. I am happy.

And for my friends who set loftier goals? I’m happy they achieved them. I literally don’t think I could have studied as diligently as them if my life depended on it!

It’s not “moving the bar”. In the securities markets it would be called the “whisper number”. You are only really happy if you make your whisper number.
And no, good enough is never good enough.

D got off the waitlist last week FINALLY! ( Didn’t realize that it can happen in 2nd week of July ) We are all thrilled that she is going to be a Doctor!

Curm,
We followed your advice by sending an LOI and it worked. Thanks to everyone who offered us hope and advice. We are now running around trying to complete all formalities relating to admissions documentation and getting ready for her move to the school.

Applying to and getting accepted at a med school is sometimes like pursuing your bf/gf. Besides your qualification, convincing her/him that you love her/him is also very important.

Great news, QT. I once hear of someone getting in the Friday before classes began! Med schools was 100% of seats filled. What a relief not to have to go through the application cycle all over again.
