2012 April ACT General Discussion

For the square and triangle I got 1/2
I put wood for the cork question
What would -3 on math be as a scaled score?

@eclark6 I don’t think they void your score (they might contact the test center people though), but I didn’t wanna take any chances… I wanna bring my 28 up to a 32 or above

I put the control group as 2 because there were no plants

the pyramid was 30/60/90 i believe.

it took me a while to figure it out though. but basically:

3sqt(3) was the height. the faces were equilateral triangles so if you looked at half of the triangle, call the base x (thus, hypotenuse is 2x)

then pythagorean theorem

x^2 + (3(sqt(3))^2 = 2x^2

solve that for x, then multiply x by two. you should get 6 (i think?). then multiply that by 8 and you get 48

@NCdukie

I realized that each face is two 30/60/90 triangles as well, but I found it easier to solve it using trigonometry.

Where L is the edge length
L sin(60) = 3√3
L = (3√3)/sin(60)

Answer is L * 8

yeah it is easier that way… I meant to say i didn’t realize it was 30/60/90 until after i’d already done it the painful way anyways though lol

for the pyramid, does anyone remember if 48 was answer choice A or B

Hey guys for number 70 on English about the farmer was it

  1. “in”
  2. In water- which makes sick- or something like that.
    Was it the shorter one of “in?” I changed to that at last second

If I’m not mistaken, I believe the answer choice read like “someone who would rather listen to a recording rather than see a live show” which, in my opinion, wouldn’t apply to someone discrediting the impact of photography.

(on the English question about a type of person described in a paragraph)

Any1 for 70 on English I posted above?

can you explain it a little better? was it the one about some kind of disease or sickness with i think salmon?

Also on that same passage, around #72, it was a rhetorical question about which would keep the paralell comparison in the previous sentence… it was about shrimp and some sort of fish… Did you guys get something about polution and the waters being sent out to the ocean ?

Nikkib- that was the correct answer. the passage was saying people would rather stare at pictures than see the real thing. so the answer was people would rather listen to a CD than go to a concert.

@college 95 yeah I got that.
For 70, I believe it was a test of repetition. It Was like “salmon get disease, which makes them I’ll”
Or if u just said “in” than it would read something like
“disease in the small populations” sorry don’t remember that clearly. I went with “in”. What did every1 else say?

Yes, the passage was redudant along with 2 of the answer choices, i dont remember it being “in” but i know i went with a one or two word answer whereas the others were quite long. Pretty confident in that one and it very may well have been “in” i just cant remember.

Okthanks. Was worried about that 1 @college 95

College95- Okay thanks, you’re probably right, I was rushing at some points in the reading because I was afraid of running out of time :p

Right when I read the writing prompt I was just like YES THIS IS EASY. But I was so burnt out after that ridiculous science section I don’t think I did as well as I could :confused: oh well

I got a 29 my first time on the ACT bc the school I took it at doesn’t have clocks in the rooms. Got a 24 on reading because of that. This time I brought a watch and I thought the test was ridiculously easy until the science. It wasn’t really bad, but it was just harder than the other 3 sections.

Reading was definitely very simple. Science had 2 out of 7 of the passages harder than what I’ve been used to. Math had 2 questions that I really disliked. English was whatever as in pretty good. The essay was a nice topic.

Does anybody remember using a colon for English?
There were two complete sentences and no other choices made sense. Don’t remember context sorry

I believe there were two instances where I used a colon. I know for sure I used it at least once.
