2012 Engineering and Physical Sciences Admission Results

cheme24,

I think you are right, but a 4.0 GPA and 140 GRE score won’t get you in everywhere/a lot of places. The weight of the GRE is minimal and can really only hurt you from what I’ve been told. I believe research experience and the professors with whom you have worked are much more important, along with GPA and undergrad institution. I look at the graduate students in labs that I’m interested in and they all worked for top PIs as undergrads. That’s the connection factor. These professors all know each other and when they recommend a student, it goes a LONG way.

For anyone interested in MIT BE, their admissions coordinator informed me that I’ll be required to present a poster during the interview weekend :O

Geez, it’s so true. All of the berkeleyites that have been accepted to the cheme program have 4.0s and good gres.

Cheme24, have you heard anything this week? It has been too quiet in my inbox!

That is very true, thumper99. I don’t go to a tier 1 undergrad, so I hope that my research experience and few publications will get me in at some tier one schools.

It has been the same here zenker11, pretty empty this week. I am expecting to hear back from a few schools next week tho, based on some of the forums from last year. The survey on gradcafe has very little responses from engineering students and its mostly biology, chemistry, and other sciences. When I called Princeton a while back they said they will give out decisions late Jan and early Feb, so there is still some waiting to do.

cheme24,

I think you should be just fine. There are a lot of students from non-top tier undergrad institutions who go to the top schools. If you have publications, you have already proven yourself. I must admit, this is a nerve-racking process. The thought of not getting into grad school is scary. I’m not sure what I’ll do until the application season next year if that is the case.

And yes, I think for engineering we should not be worried yet. Most schools are probably just inviting their top candidates right now.

based on thegradcafe, it looks like next week and the following week is gonna be hot time for us engineering major. I’m praying that WUSTL will send email/call me next week or so. both the profs I contacted at WUSTL replied me back very fast and were interested in my work. just don’t know if they will be in the committee and bring me in…

I’m surprised we haven’t heard a thing from the University of Washington BioE program yet. Last year a slew of emails (of all results) went out on the 11th. I was expecting to hear from them this week, but so far not a peep.

If you search on the results for bio*, there are 410 results in the past month. For bioengineering (and/or biomedical engineering, including the misspelling from the Caltech person who must have a stuffy nose - ‘California Institute Of Technology (Caltech) Bioengineerig, PhD (F12)’ ) there are 6.

I agree, the next two weeks are going to be interesting.
Best of luck to you all!

Congratulations to everyone accepted. Among friends and myself, we’re seeing acceptances come from a few programs-

-acceptance to PHD Materials Science- U Washington
-acceptance PhD Chemistry- CalTech, U Michigan

Is there another thread on this forum for PhD Materials Science Acceptances for 2012?

Invited for on-campus open house+interview for Yale Geology & Geophysics.

Have any ChemE’s heard back from the following schools yet:

Northwestern
UPenn
UCLA
Columbia

Cheme222, I haven’t heard anything from nwestern (idk about the other schools on your list)! Perhaps this week…

Just heard back from Stanford this afternoon.

^
sad face?

@lilyi89 - how did your interview go? And also what department (and MS/PhD)?

About Northwestern’s ChemE program: I got good news from them last week.

info can be found on page 1

btw. It would be really nice if people can post their admission status along with their info so lurkers like me don’t have to create a new account and abuse the search function :)

Thegrandtaco, congratulations! Can I ask, were you an automatic in…just trying to gauge my chances! Also, what day of the week did you hear?

Sorry for the confusion :P. I got accepted into Stanford for PhD in Chemical Engineering. I have a phone interview with them next week.

interview after acceptance?

The interview was informal when they called me last year after I got in. It was just a chance to have a brief chat and congratulate you in a more personal way.
