I got admitted like last month with tag 3.5 GPA in Physics.

@jshongs I am Bio applicant (still pending). With calc I completed and enrolled in Calc II.

According to assist, calc2 isn’t even required as a bio major. Any particular reason why you chose the calc1/2 route as oppose to applied calc? Did you apply to any other UC’s?

I’m thinking about just taking applied calc rather than calc2 next semester.

^^^^^ @jshong21

I can almost guarantee for Biology majors, Calc 2 is a requirement for UCSB,

and I just checked according to Assist, calc 2 is a requirement for UCSB, it is listed as Math 3b,

also you can view UCSB’s website for a BIO major and it shows Math 3B (calc2) as a requirement for the major

http://my.sa.ucsb.edu/Catalog/Current/Documents/2011_Majors/LS/MCDB/Biological-Sciences-BS-2011.pdf

MATH 3A & Calculus with Applications, First Course
MATH 3B Calculus with Applications, Second Course
OR
MATH 34A & Calculus for Social and Life Sciences
MATH 34B Calculus for Social and Life Sciences

This is what I am currently looking at on my screen.
Assist >> CC >> UCSB >> Biological sciences.
Math 3A/3B=(At my CC- 2semesters of calc1/2) or MATH 34A/34B=(At my CC- 1 semester of Calc w/ Applications)

Also, the link you provided me also shows 3A-B or 34A-B.

I’ll call them tomorrow to confirm this…

I chose Calc II because I’m Pre Med and would have to take it before Med school anyway so my counselor advised me to take it now. Calc with app is sufficient for SB but not most other UCs.

Calc 2 is not required for med school… maybe like harvard and a very few others… i have friends that are med students and only when up to calc1.

^^^^

sorry Im getting a little confused, because are you saying that Calc II is not a requirement for UCSB Bio majors???

According to my counselor it is so I’m taking it…an am successful so it’s fine. I am also considering attempting to change to BioChem which requires Calc IV so either way it’s fine.
And no Calc II is NOT required for UCSB Bio majors it’s Calc with applications OR Calc I and II.

I just got into UCSB for econ & acct…with a 3.60. However, I will be going to SDSU in the fall for finance.

@matrix13

Why? UCSB is better and has a lot recruiters for the E & A program.

Calc 2 is required for med schools…

UCLA med, USC med, UCSF all require calc 2. I don’t know where your friends go, but I’m guessing it’s definitely lower tier. Calc 2 is the minimum at these schools and they usually want multivariable as well.

@matrix…thats really weird, because it has always been the opposite for me…going to a UC was financially more better than going to a CSU, because the UCs gave me alot more money…

i guess it all depends

Just got in for chemical engineering. it’s about time

Yeah…many schools require Calc II for a requirement for Medical School, and many students dont realize that for many bio majors, a CALC II class is just the second quarter of Calculus… and CALC I is the first quarter…both classes which will probably use the same book.

It doesnt always matter if the name is just Calculus w/Applications, it just meaning you are going to need two calculus classes…

sometimes schools uses Calculus I as a general calculus course, and Calculus II as a more advanced/ rigourous Calc course

but i believe UCSB requires Math 3a and Math 3b, which would be considered Calc I and Calc II, and the means the first and second half of the calculus course…

so good luck to everyone…

It’s really weird how I’m still pending at UCSB lol

alevy123, yeah me too.
