** 2012 UCSD Transfer Decisions Thread **

Ahh yeah, i’m wondering about the waitlist chances. My friend got waitlisted and is anxious to get in SD. For myself, I was accepted to both UCLA and UCSD, and while UCLA has a bit of a better name overall, UCSD’s engineering department is definitely superior in certain areas hence why I chose to SIR to UCSD. All this hype about UCLA and UCB but people sometimes forget UCSD is still considered a 1st tier UC school.

for the love of money.

can someone please tell me if 294 wait listed accepted students last year is good or bad

I would say it’s a good thing that they took 294 people off the waitlist knowing that they have already over-enrolled with the people that had already sent in their SIRs. I meant they were aiming for 2400. They enrolled ~2600. I mean you can take it as a negative meaning that there will be larger class sizes but if you’re one of the lower end on the GPA spectrum its a good sign that UCSd is willing to go over their target to accept eligible applicants.

I for one think UCSD is under-admitting this year and fully utilizing the purpose of the waitlist. Once they see how many people have SIRed to their campus they’ll be able to reach into the waitlist and grab however many people they need to reach their 2400. So say they only admitted 5000 people with only 40% of the people SIRing, means that they’ve only enrolled 2000 people. So they can dip into their waitlist and get 400 more people.

^^ i know i sound a little optimistic but i refuse to give up hope on attending my dream school. My optimism is all i have haha. =p. I cant afford to think any way else.

@Act we appreciate the optimism :slight_smile: It helps the rest of us keep our chin up too!

Sociology

Pretty sure all the people that got told today were wait-list, maybe.

thanks A.

…

So people that are going to UCSD: Are you guys gonna live in village pines or is there other on-campus apartments we can live in?

Waitlisted
Major: International Studies
GPA: ~3.30

Waitlisted
Major: Philosophy
GPA: 3.4

What are the chances of getting in? Signed up for the waitlist.

Is this kind of like an SGR (spring grade request), where they look at your grades if you’re borderline? Or is it not likely to be an acceptance due to limited enrollment room?

It’s more of a “we’ve over-enrolled the past few years so we’re going to under-enroll and just keep the eligible applicants dangling until we see how many spots are available in June” They told me their cut off was 3.53 without TAG so there should be a good portion of those who are admitted using UCSD as a backup plan but are bound for more prestigious colleges. =].

@looza
i think that is the only dorm for traditional transfer students.

@LoozaFoLife

I’m going to be living in the Village. I don’t think transfers can live in the other dorms on campus, unless they had a bunch of open space or something. So, you’d have to look on campus most likely if you don’t want to live in the Village.

Last year, people that were waitlisted found out they were waitlisted near the end of April…I have a feeling this waitlist doesn’t really mean anything and it’s their way of kind of calming us down. they clearly haven’t accepted a lot of students yet…and I feel like I should look at the waitlist option as something bigger than only 28.5% acceptance. Smart move ucsd

Oh alright yea I was just wondering. I’m probably going to live in the village next year too. Are you guys going to the transfer admit day?

@LoozaFoLife

Yup, I’ll be at transfer admit day.

@acoustic I bet they’re just buying themselves more time hahaha.
Admissions Officer 1: “We have 10000 more applications to go over in a week!!!”
Admissions Officer 2: “It’s okay. Let’s just waitlist people so that we have until June.”

Well I was expecting a flat-out NO from UCSD, but got waitlisted for mechanical engineering with a 3.17 GPA (now 3.3). Should I even take this as good news or is it just a false sense of hope? UCSD has always been my dream school but once they raised their TAG to 3.5, I gave up on it a long time ago.

Now its like opening up a closed wound :frowning: Just reject me already.

Waitlisted
Major: International Studies
GPA: 3.48

Do they actually read the 200 word essay? Or will they just admit by non-impacted major/GPA?
