It is odd that some of the directors aren’t more supportive. My S told his director as soon as school started that he would not be doing the winter term show. His director insisted that he WOULD be involved…even if it was a bit part. So son auditioned anyway…knowing he would barely be at rehearsals the two weeks leading up to the performance. After the auditions, he received an email from his director asking if he would be terribly disappointed to NOT be in the play…because he was having to cut 7 people…and it would be nice if S would give up his spot. WHATEVER!!! I have to try really hard to stay out of (most of) it…or I would go crazy!

And PS…we just attended the performance last weekend…and it was an eye-opening experience for my S to watch his peers from the audience…something that obviously hasn’t happened for the past 8 years. He was able to see who could (and who couldn’t) emote, project, etc. He said it is much harder to see that when you are up close and have performed it over and over and over again together. I’m glad he got to see it from our perspective.

Son was pressured to be in the fall play when I wanted him to concentrate on audition prep. Now he is the lead in the Spring musical, but luckily it is “West Side Story”, and while he was at Unifieds they worked on the many dance scenes that his character is not present for. We are small town, and the director/English teacher and his cast mates/lifelong friends are extremely supportive. He knows he is fortunate to not have the dilemmas that other kids are facing, plus I tell him often!!

wow, we have been very lucky. Kid’s directors at our school have been very accepting of him taking time off to see colleges. and he is going for a BA so his absences, although important in college selection, have not been as crucial as they are for kids auditioning for BFA programs. Our directors seem to get that college is very important.

My D had the lead in Our Town and her director and classmates were wonderful about her missing rehearsals…including tech and dress. She is the only one from her school pursuing a BFA in acting so maybe that is why…anyway, I hope things work out for your son :)

bissou - like your D, my D is the only one from her school in this senior class that is pursuing BFA in acting so I don’t get it. My D even tried to suggest that they rehearse the scenes that she is not in while she was away at Unifieds in LA and Chicago but her theater teacher/director wouldn’t budge. Grrrrrr. And she’s not double cast so it seems like a waste of precious rehearsal time for those kids and a very mixed message to up and coming theater students at that school. Her classmates are incredibly supportive, thank goodness.

Anneliesesmom. How does your D know she wasn’t invited to Rutgers callback? Was she notified? Or are you just assuming becuase you haven’t heard yet?

dramamom0804 - I guess I’m just assuming since we haven’t heard anything yet. Given the word floating around on here, invitations went out last week.

I’m actually the first person to pursue a BFA in anything theatre related from my school, EVER. So, everyone is very supportive and kind of in awe of the process. Lots of, “you have to AUDITION for college!?” My director is very understanding as well.
However, I don’t mean to brag, but I think I’ve been present for more rehearsals than some people in my cast even with this crazy schedule. Guess that shows how much we kids doing this are really obsessed with theatre!

Anneliesesmom - you are right, and we are so thrilled he got a callback. He will work it out - he is just very stressed and feels personally very badly about inconveniencing everyone. What a life our kids are choosing!

I’m not sure they are finished. We are waiting too and I’ve not written them off yet! Remember we have had a lot of bad weather here (we live about an hour from Rutgers) which probably canceled school last Thursday and there was a day off Monday. So I’m definitely hoping they aren’t finished!

Thanks glassharmonica! I read that in the threads from the past few years but there seems to be so much conflicting info, I don’t know what to believe at this point and I didn’t want my D to get her hopes up.

However, unlike CMU, which does not sent out any rejection letters (at least as of last year) until after the calls go out, Purchase has historically sent out rejection letters to mosts of those who auditoned prior to the date the calls go out.

D completed last audition today, taxes done, and all financial papers submitted to colleges. Excited to have everything done but now I don’t have anything to occupy my mind except the results. Guess I’ll just have to obsessively check CC!!
