[/ul][ b]Reflection**[ul]
[] Strengths: Essay, recs, ecs?
[] Weaknesses: Generic ecs? test scores, GPA
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: AWAITING ANSWER FROM YALE
[/ul]General Comments: Hope to God I can even begin to compare to the cream of the crop of the SCEA pool :(

I’m not sure why I’m doing this, but I will anyways. (Let’s just say I’m following eating food’s advice and helping out the youngins.)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 720 V, 790 M, 740 W (11 essay)
[] ACT: 32 (composite)
[] SAT II: 740, 760 (I still have to take one more and retake another)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): No idea… (Maybe like a 3.7/3.8, but I might just be hoping)

[] Summer Activities: A month in France (summer before junior year), Internship (summer before senior year)
[] Essays: I think they’re good and everyone who’s read them say they like it (One’s about an experience I had while on a trip called Sojourn to the Past and why I couldn’t cry at Dr. King’s memorial but I did at another one that shouldn’t have been so emotional; the second one is about my realization that I am privileged, not as much as my classmates but privileged nonetheless)
[] Teacher Recommendation: They should be great: one from my French teacher who loves me and should say good things; the other is from my History teacher and adviser who knows me very well, not only as a history student but also personally
[] Counselor Rec: No idea, but I’m assuming (hoping?) that he says good things. But then again, he doesn’t know me too well. He knows about my leadership positions around school but I think he bases the other stuff on teacher write-ups.
[] Additional Rec: I am part of a program called Prep for Prep, and they write a recommendation as well. Should be amazing.
[] Interview: Hmm… It was interesting. I was so nervous because he kept challenging me so my answers weren’t really that polished (I wasn’t expecting that). But he said it went well, so for my sanity, I’ll just take his word for it.

General Comments: As much as we might want to help you by posting our “credentials,” PLEASE do not compare yourself to other people. You are you and there’s something special about you. Yeah, you might not have a 2400 SAT or an amazing GPA, but that doesn’t mean that you are not Yale (or any college for that matter)-material. Know that you are worth something and don’t tear your hair out because everyone else on CC seems to be applying with perfect grades and scores. (Trust me. Been there, done that.)

Reflection
[] Strengths: well-rounded [] Weaknesses: well-rounded-could screw me over, im not great at one thing.

Stats:
• SAT: CR: , M: , W: None
• SAT II: Math II C: , Chemistry: , Physics: , Biology: taking in January Chem and Math2

Subjective
• Essays: Told they were really good, one about family coping with divorce, and me personally overcoming that trauma and how i’ve changed since then- indicating the rising performance in school and GPA, the other about how i’m searching for a religion that will fit me.
• Teacher Recs: Calc/precal teacher- one of best in career, praise, well written too. the other from professor who taught USH, kind of the same as above, more quirky.
• Counselor Rec: First year here, so eh not sure, should be good though
• Supplement Information (Y/N): NO
• Interview: Went really well
• Hook (recruited athlete, legacy, Nobel Prize): Hispanic, South Texas

Was mentored by a professor at Trinity University in number theory and other discrete math topics.

You guys are all so amazing, it makes me want to withdraw my application and go to community college ><

I’m not going to post it all on here but I’d say my strengths are extensive experience with violin performance/touring, leadership and accomplishment with our scholastic bowl team, and a lot of commitment and activity with school and community cultural organizations.

Strengths: great essays and recs, but everyone on this thread has said the same. Lots of personality with a pretty interesting interview.
Weaknesses: I haven’t cured cancer or spent my summer building orphanages in a third-world country. I also have a couple B’s that didn’t really do much to my GPA or rank, but still look kind of bad.

But good luck to everyone! Fifteen days left…

Yo, this **** is outta control, you ahve Davidson Fellows downplaying that as a “real achievement”, you have eagle scouts saying they dont have enough comm service (particularly depressing because i myself am an eagle scout) and then you have some crazy two time USAMO, USABO, USNCO 2400 monstrosity making me want to cry myself to sleep.

AP (place score in parenthesis): Nine 5’s USH, Eng Lang, US Gov, Comp Gov, Micro, Macro, Psych, Calc AB, Calc BC. and one 4 Chem. Chem and the Calcs were in school, everything self-studied (possible explanation for relatively low qpa)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Phys Mech, AP Phys E/m, ap eng lit, ap bio, multivariable calc, architecture (required class), and comm media (grduation reqt, but my teacher was an english major at yale and has worked wonders on my essays!)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): nmsf, national ap scholar, eagle scout with palm
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): town’s recycling advisory committee (high school rep), town’s freecycling grant committee (chair), fed challenge (econ competition, president), various of other service related stuff
Volunteer/Community service: easily 750+, but i never count/keep track
Summer Activities: internship at city hall and in shanghai (pretty cool experience but i never really write about it)
Essays: probs 8-9.5/10 not like super duper fantastic, but definitely above avg
Teacher Recommendation: pretty good (one came out of nowhere and volunteered, and another wrote solid recs before for other things)
Counselor Rec: pretty good, i imagine that since there’s only 67 of us, she can spend more time on each one, and since i take so many APs (she proctors them) that i’d be memorable
Additional Rec: Director of the Department i worked for this summer at city hall-fantastic (my one saving grace, makes what i did this summer (really hardcore systems management/municipal public policy) stand out as something more than just picking up trash, (which if you cut the ******** out of “municipal solid waste management” sounds like)
Interview: had one on campus in the summer, it was so-so compared to my other ones
Other:
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
School Type: Public Magnet
Ethnicity: Chinese represent!
Gender: M
Income Bracket: upper middle (not eligible for finaid)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): i’m really really big on sustainability, and colleges around the nation are catching on, i have som pretty good experience in terms of sustainability mgmt, have spoken to several individuals at yale about it, and they seem pretty excited about what i can bring to the table (idk how much that helps in terms of admissions, but yale’s committment to sustainability was something that got me excited about it, more so than say azkaban)
Reflection
[] Strengths: see above (i guess what i said above was more of a strength an a hook, but oh well) well-rounded[] Weaknesses: relatively low qpa, could be mitigated by test scores and academic extracurricular activities.

I need to start avoiding threads like this for my own good…but I think I get some kind of masochistic pleasure out of reading about the kanoodles of people that are more likely to be accepted than I am. :p

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2340 (800 CR, 740 Math, 800 Writing)
[] ACT: Nope, SAT’s good enough for me
[] SAT II: 800 Literature, 800 US History, 800 Math 2, 700 Chemistry
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 11/540 (My school counts 8th grade…)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Environmental Science (5), US History (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: Debate, Academic Decathlon, AP English Lit, AP Calc BC, AP Stats, AP Chem, AP Government, AP Macroecon.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMSF, National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar (I guess?)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Debate 11-12 (Captain 12, board 12), Academic Decathlon 11-12 (Co-captain 12), MUN 11-12 (Officer 12), Vietnamese Culture Club 11-12 (VP 12), Sci-Fi Club 9-12 (Officer 11, VP 12).
[] Job/Work Experience: Helped my dad completely renovate a house over one summer. Spent a solid 200 hours on it, probably.
[] Volunteer/Community service: None to speak of. Probably 50 hours picked up here and there.
[] Summer Activities: Aforementioned renovation of house, Acadec summer school, reading a ton of books and watching a ton of movies.
[] Essays: One about becoming league champion in debate, gotta say it’s pretty risky in terms of style and subject matter (presents me as a very flawed individual). Other about watching all 100 of AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Movies, less risky, I think it’s interesting if nothing else. Overall, I can’t really tell how good my writing is, but people have really liked my essays.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One from English teacher who totally loved me (made copies of an essay I wrote for his wife, another English teacher, to show students as an example of the perfect essay, saved my last essay to be the last one he read before he retired; I was really close to him and he’s a great guy). Other from a US History teacher who didn’t write a very good one, but at least gave me good percentiles?
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor, whom I actually knew pretty well, went out on maternity leave, so a new counselor had to write it. I think I made a good impression in the brief time I talked to her, though. She mostly went by what my teachers said, which was good, I think.
[] Additional Rec: Nah.
[] Interview: Went pretty well, I think.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): California
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A

[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: almost exactly $100,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Super strong stats for a Mexican, essays could be great, same goes for my English teacher’s recommendation.
[] Weaknesses: Extra-curriculars start in 11th grade (somewhat explained by essay), lacking AP classes, weak-ish rank for a bad school.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Haven’t been deferred/rejected yet! Give it a couple of weeks.
[/ul]General Comments: You guys are all awesome! I’d be honored to meet you all if I somehow get in.

Holy cow, TheWerg, we are the same person!

Identical SAT breakdown, same lack of ACT scores, you have better SAT IIs and GPA by like .02. Plus we have the same debate creds and almost the same senior courseload too.

Are you sure you’re not my long-lost twin?

Are you a MexiJew? If so, we can hopefully have a tearful reunion at the Yale admitted students weekend thing!

Indeed I am! In fact, I invented the pinto bean latke!

That would actually be sort of cool. Maybe I should try it. But anyway, I’m like 98% positive you’ll be admitted. As for your long-lost sibling… odds aren’t looking so good. Asian with sh**** essays.

Seriously this thread is ridiculous. Screw you all!
