sorrento…our kid did allergy shots and seasonal apts for treatment just off campus on West End near the football field. turned out to be a good decision for him. Allergy shots are always a boring use of time but it was just as fast as the campus health care center and we felt the oversight re a real allergist and their nurses worked out for the best when needed. Yes, they did his tests all over again but he takes three shots a week…and always has.

Good advice from Faline2. If your child is suffering now, just wait until spring when the National Arboretum blooms. It’s an allergy nightmare then. Beautiful, but not an allergy friendly environment.

We’re not to allergy shots yet (and are actually still wondering whether it’s just a bad, lingering cold). Hoping the Student Health Center knows what it’s doing!

our guys on shots since childhood…so spring is always very difficult and requires way more indoor time than is normal for the young. Rites of Spring for instance …very limited for our son. Ditto for Duke son–real bummer spending limited time goofing around outdoors. Who swears by the nasal rinse kits pushed by allergists…nightly for his health at Duke and also daily in allergy seasons during his life in the workplace five years later in another city famous for pollen dumps that go on and on in the spring. There are youtube videos on them and they are an excellent way to rid your body of allergens before you sleep… rather than relying on drugs only. Also nasal sprays used the month before pollen drops each season can be very beneficial…better to be proactive and treat before the season peaks…is my point even if you don’t explore shots. Luckily, Vandy is a beautiful place to be outside all four seasons and puts on a rather showy and glorious autumn, too.

Helpful advice, Faline – thank you.

Just home from a weekend in Nashville. We did not attend Parents’ Weekend, so this was our first chance to see our D, meet her new friends, drive them places, bring down more clothes, etc. It seems like things are going well for our daughter. She likes most of her classes, is finding enough groups and activities, and is making friends. Most of her friends are from her House, but there were a few that I still can’t figure out how she met… Many of them were still moaning about the Calc test from Thursday night. It sounds like nobody was able to complete it.

We also brought some fall weather down with us. Frost advisory?!?

Fall break starts! DS is flying home tonight. Are there school shuttles he can take? If so, where would one find information regarding shuttle times and pick up locations?

I do not believe there are shuttles provided for fall break. I just searched me email (details are always emailed out) and there’s no info.

@Pancaked, Thanks so much. DS will try to find people to share a cab then.
I am so looking forward for DS to get home. Four days of DS’ favorite foods have been planned - Salmon, steak, BBQ ribs, and my specialty chicken.

To all of you whose students are coming home for Fall Break - Enjoy.

Last year Son stayed on campus for Fall Break. This year he’s been invited to spend Fall Break at his roommates home in a nearby state. I’m sure he’s going to enjoy the home cooked meals.

Freshman D is on her way as we speak. Can barely control the excitement! This will be the last time we see her until Thanksgiving, so I plan to savor the moment

You can use http://www.inshuttle.com, mentioned here before. They have pickup spots at several places on campus. They look for at least 24 hours notice for scheduling. $18 round trip to airport.

@MaynardGKrebs, thanks for the helpful link.

It looks like Inshuttle allows for 12 hours prior notice now. Still $18 round trip to airport.

Jealous for those of you who are getting their students home for Fall Break. My First-Year D is staying on campus. Most of her friends live close enough that they are going home, but just for a day or two. D was looking forward to catching up on some sleep.

Mlmama–My first year s is also staying on campus for Fall break…fortunately has several friends also staying, he mentioned many other first years left but older students not so much. Says he’s enjoying having time to relax and study…Can’t wait to see him (and my other two kids also returning home) for Thanksgiving!

Another successful class registration. S has learned the advantage of getting up early to register for classes. One class he wanted had 7 seats available after the juniors and seniors registered. He was able to get the class and it has now gone to the waitlist.

Wish I could say the same for go2girl. Apparently there are 200 spots for the Astronomy class but only 60 spots for the labs. She’s on the waitlist for two labs but is freaking out. It really doesn’t make a lot of sense.

The astronomy lab is not required, is it?

My DD signed up for Astronomy with no lab. Probably because she didn’t need a lab as she is taking chem plus a lab this semester. She only needs one lab.
