Nevermind I lied, I’m in! haha

I have my essay topics down, which I’m glad for. It’s just the writing that’s proving trickier than I expected. I’m just not used to writing about myself in this context, or for this audience.

My summer is pretty busy too. I’m doing tons of volunteer work at a number of different places, and I have a research position at a local university. Takes up quite a bit of time, haha.

As part of one of my interview positions, I interview people, and I’ve probably gone through over 100 in the past two years. That said, the thing I admire most in interviewees is extroversion. Many people are shy and introverted, and that’s perfectly fine, but if it gets to the point where almost nothing is said at an interview, it becomes a huge problem. Also, it might be good if you have a question or two prepared to ask the interviewer at the end of the interview, or in the middle (wherever would seem most natural) because it shows you’ve thought ahead and have the confidence to reverse the roles, at least for a little bit.

Try not to give programmed responses to anything. It’s terribly annoying and doesn’t get noticed. This goes without saying, but I thought I’d bring it up anyway. If your parents will be accompanying you to the office in which you’ll be interviewed make sure that you do all of the talking, unless your parents are addressed directly. You are the one who will be interviewed, and you are the one who should have initially expressed interest in booking an interview. If your parents are prone to speak for you, be sure to tell them not to at first. Many parents tend to do that, and it’s incredibly annoying for this type of situation.

Lastly, observe interview formality without going overboard. Many people are overly insistent on being formal and decorous (and somewhat artificial) during interviews, and it often works against them. If you feel like you should say or do something, and that gets in the way of expressing your personality, just skip it altogether. That said, don’t be too chill either, because that will come off as though you don’t care. Aaaaand, if you’re sort of unsure of how to interpret a question, be sure to ask for clarification, and if you give an answer that you think might not be in-depth enough, it’s always okay to ask if your answer actually answers the question. I feel like this is getting confusing.

But that’s it. Haha. GOOD LUCK! You’ll be great.

good advice there rocker, i’ll be rereading that post the day before my alumni interview if i’m lucky enough to get one.

this sucks, now i wanna go there even more, and all of this, talking to you guys and everything, is gonna make it that much worse when i don’t get in… you guys all seem like such awesome ppl

emily - if it’s student and it’s a guy, flirt! lol, jk no i don’t really have much advice or expertise, but keep in mind that an interview can only help you, and we’re all behind you cheering you on =)

cavalierpup- random but omg cavalier king charles puppies are the cutest!!

Who do we feel should be on this thread? I’ve accepted everyone who’s requested, but I don’t want to start the thread and leave anyone out because as we all know once you start a thread you can’t add anyone

so we should have
me
rocker
smile
cavalier
emily
demiitasse
solittletime

anyone else?

^harvard

i feel like we’re leaving someone out. hmm i’ll skim this thread and see!

OMG i knoooow you guys! think if we could have a CC hallway at Yale. HAHAH. ohhhh boy that would be insane. We should all get in because of our dedication to this thread. We all have so much in common, it’s so coool

emily-I know you’re leaving today but GOOD LUUUUUCK! (again…haha)

rocker-goooood advice. I think I can do that. I probably won’t get an interview until November or something but I’ll have to read this over before I go. I’m really outgoing, so the extroverted part shouldn’t be a problem and I ALWAYS have questions…so questions about YALE shouldn’t be hard. I just hope that I won’t say something stupid if a question catches me offguard you know? hahah.

I had a job the first part of the summer and it was crazy. SO busy. This second part of the summer, I’m doing SAT prep (want to raise CR and M), reading thebiggestbookknowntomankind, essays, babysitting. Running in the morning/night (depending on when I wake up ) and then hanging out with friends! Kinda slacking on the essay part…dang it. But I told myself if I get a goood head start with essays by early August, I can go shopping…which means I really HAVE to do some serious writing this week.

I just skimmed a couple random pages here and there

Let’s see…Melody224, chair2, and portugueseninja have been on here quite a bit a few pages back. Don’t know where they went…maybe vacation?
thefranchize9 showed up for a little bit…he…she? just happened to be on the page I was randomly checking

Haha, I just looked back at my interview post last night, and instead of “As part of one of my interview positions,” I meant to say “As part of one of my volunteer positions…” Clearly I was tired.

I’m still here I’ve been observing you guys from a distance. But not in a creepy way.

Hey I’m still here! Sorry I haven’t been that involved for a while, I’ve been working on my essays (and I’m almost done with my first 1st draft yay!) Ah! I really want to join the facebook group but I’m kind of scared that this will mean I’ve gotten too attached to Yale and it will hurt even more when/if I get deferred or rejected come December 15. Plus, no one knows I have a CC account, and I know many people who stalk or “lurk” these boards but don’t post…I just don’t know what to do!
Good advice rockermcr, and lol, when I read that I was wondering what you interview people for and thought it was cool that you actually conducted interviews. If I could add on some advice, I’d say ask questions, because (this is actually a great way to find inside info on ____ University) but it also makes you seem more involved, rather than robotic. But NEVER ask questions that could be answered if you went to read their website. It makes it look like you didn’t care/and or are lazy.
Well, lets all send good vibes for 2010emily if she’s already left. I love this thread, everyone is so nice and supportive. I hope wherever I go to college I meet people like you guys :)

The last group of Prospective Yalies Club members for class of 2013 were lovely as well, I think it’s a Yale thing :D

sending good luck vibes to Emily

^Yeah, I was looking at the class of 2013 thread a few months back and they all seemed cool as well! It’s DEF. a Yale thing :)

Glad you guys are still with us melody and portugueseninja! haha I thought you guys disappeared for a while or something!

I had doubts about joining the fb group too but it’s a private group and everything. itsbeenreal has to approve you for you to join the group so there won’t be any weird stalkers (haha nobody knows I have a CC account either). so you two should totally join…if you read the last couple of pages of this thread, you’ll totally see where we got the name for the group haha

rocker–wow I thought you got some crazy cool summer job helping out with interviews hahaha thanks for the advice though!

I’ve been a bit busy lately because I’ve had birthday celebrations and planning for things and I essentially have 3 jobs and that takes a lot of my time. Then while I’m at my “regular” work I come on CC but I mostly just hang out in the Internationals Class of 2014 thread. I felt a bit left out here, I don’t know why!

But I’m here. And excited about the facebook group, I’ll join when I get home. Whooooot!

ohhh melody you’re so sweet and I KNOW, i joined cuz i wanted to and everyone’s so nice, but it sucked cuz when i was doing it i knew not getting in, which is bad enough already, would be woorse. and about ppl not knowing u have an account, its been real - could you make it a private group so no one knows it exists for ppl who want privacy? -wait, is it already?

llol a secret group that no one knows exists where only select people are a part of - it sounds like a secret society haha

“Prospective Yalies Club” - really? laaammee, SO unoriginal compared to our “The Confidential Purple Shirt, Lopsided Bow Headband, Ice Cream Eating Club” =D

That one’s pretty good too. Does it have soy ice cream?

^ oooof course =P

Yayy for staying busy and welcome back melody and portugueseninja! I hope you won’t feel left out anymore…we talk about ANYTHING, really.

solittletime–I know I’ve mentioned this before…but WOW your name is so so so SO true. especially now! i feel like there’s so much i want to get done this year but …so little time! hahah :)

That reminds me of that tv show with the Olsen twins… I used to love that. They used to be so adorable.

haha yaa, it freaks me out how fast time goes by

portugueseninja - YES! omg, i loved that tooooo, i used to love the olsen twins.

^I know! It feels like just yesterday I was a freshman, and now I’m almost a senior!
And it feels like summer just FLEW by :(

i’m with melody (a couple posts above) on the fb group idea. i’ve also been away trying to do some productive stuff as my summer is coming down to a close! ahh.
