I actually have a couple of word works documents that never leave my uh… whatsit, the tool/window bar selection thingy on the bottom of the screen? does it even have name? there’s one page where i just randomly jot down inspirations and ideas for possible essay topics. it helps a lot. writing muse pops in and out erratically… though some are just really weird phases that don’t make any sense

Chair2 - “a lot to write” - yeah, that’s my problem! I tried doing a quick paragraph to see how it would look (although obviously I don’t know the character limit yet… I think?), and it read like one of those yearbook quotes: “Thanks, Kentucky High School, for the people, the cafeteria, the library, the athletics, the faculty, Honors Lit, AP Bio 09…”

Maybe it’s just my school that has yearbook quotes like this, but totally what my paragraph reminded me of. I was just trying to stick too much in!

Lana - that sounds like a really good idea, actually, with the constantly open word documents. I actually think weird phrases that don’t make any sense are helpful = you never know when they might suddenly start making some sense! Also, you can totally use them for, like, other writing projects later on. I haven’t written a LOT of personal essays, but I’ve done a few, and although I don’t know how good they are, I kind of like them. It makes me sort of sad to think that the only place I might use them is in, well, college applications. Maybe I should spruce them up a bit and pretend they’re short stories.

I wish I had a more personal experiance with Yale. Like one of my friends went there to visit and stumbled upon this impromptu group in rehearsal and just watching them interact made her inspired… I dunno, that essay would be sweet. But hopefully our passion will be even more intense since we’ve -or rather i’ve- never even been there…

oh sylva, one’s actually just “Robot dance! born to die…?!?” I don’t think my terrible memory will ever make sense of it. but they’re fun to read anyways xD

Thought I’d join in…

I’m going to apply to Yale SCEA also.

I visited in March and went to a nearby info session in December after my math teacher who went to yale convinced me that it was basically perfect for my type: the “renaissance man,” liberal arts type as opposed to the super-focused, one-area-of-expertise type.

I would really love to get in. Yale and Princeton are tied for my first choice and it would make me feel so good to get into Yale early and not have to worry during RD.

Lanaesque - haha, robot dance… um, I’m not sure what to make of that either. I’m sure it shows off how unique you are though ;)

I don’t know what I think about the short paragraph prompt. Obviously the “why Yale” part is important, because otherwise why would they include it? But part of me thinks that it’s not gonna be like the deciding factor or anything. After all, it’s one measly paragraph - they can’t really expect you to express perfectly and beautifully exactly why you want to attend Yale in that cramped space. And given that there is only one Yale and only like 2098340938409 applicants, there’s bound to be some repetition in theme if not in detail.

xatuuatx: Good luck to you too! Maybe I’ll see you there next year ;)

How many words max in the “WHY YALE?” questioin???

^ i think it’s 1600 characters. maybe not? lol

nice one…

oh, btw im Yale SCEA!!! woo hoooooooo!!!

It might have been 150 last year but I’m really not sure.

ok, spill it, what makes you special? for yale.

Hey everyone!
I’m applying Yale SCEA as well! You all seem like really nice and friendly people
I’m excited/nervous about applying to Yale. It is my top choice-there is like nothing bad about Yale!
So when did you all decide that you wanted to apply early to Yale?

@2010emily: What makes me special? Eh. My scores aren’t particularly high, but I do have a prestigious national award (hoping for another by application time–doubt it’ll happen, though) and a definite focus in my app (English/writing). I’m also a standout in my small town. I’m hoping my essay and my podunk background gets me some traction.

I doubt I’ll get in as an unhooked white girl with sub-2300 scores. Anyway, what makes you special?

my scores aren’t as good as yours, right under 2200 :-), 32 ACT, but strong math (800SAT), and I have a national “talent” thing going on in a weird area for ivy league schools, but unhooked white chick doesn’t help! :-)

hey, just the thread i was looking for!
i really want to do apply SCEA at yale. i’m totally, completely on board with the whole see-saw thing mentioned before. i’m reading people’s “national awards” and stuff and…well, you know the rest =P
i have really strong scores and grades (4.0/2400) and a whole lotta EC’s but nothing really solid about the EC’s. idk, im just really confuzzled.

i know this is really weird (kinda funny, actually) but honestly, the first time i really considered yale was after watching gilmore girls (ducks don’t shoot me!) lol, after that i did a bunch of research and stuff, and it seems really great.

are the common app essay q’s the same as every year?

2010emily, the modeling? Sorry, I saw you post somewhere else. That’s interesting.

almostcrimes, yes, they are. Every year.

My daughter was admitted to Yale EA last year (as well as Harvard and Amherst among other schools during RD). Test scores and GPA’s are obviously important, but read the attached Q & A from the NY Times. There is a lot more to the admission process than the numbers; they won’t get you into a school like Yale, but they can keep you out. They look for much more. In the attached NY Times Q&A from last December Yales’s Dean of Admissions, Jeffrey Brenzel, participated and shared, in his very articulate way, lots of good stuff on Yale’s admission practices. I think it’s terrific information if you’re applying to any Top 25 school. Here goes: [Q. and A.: College Admissions - Questions/Answers Blog - NYTimes.com](Q. and A.: College Admissions - The New York Times)
Good luck to all of you!

Hello from an international SCEAer!

I haven’t even done the SATs yet. STRESSSS! I spend every morning learning US History. I have the SAT in October, then US History and Lit in November (praying the scores get to Yale promptly!) then possibly Biology in December for the possible sad moment where I get declined at Yale and have to proceed with my RD applications. So no room for screw ups.

You’re all such high flyers, it’s terribly intimidating. To be honest I’m not expecting to be able to get a 2300 or anything like that. I’ll be thrilled with anything over 2000, and relying on my essays and “life experience” and all that to make me interesting.

I love Yale. Love love love love. I was also one of the ones who started out with a Princeton fetish. But then discovered Yale <3

It would be SO fun for us all to get in and beable to have a big CC meet up :D

^^^^^
wigwam, yeah that’s my weird EC, kind of unusual, at least I hope for Yale it is. (but all those Victoria Secret catalogue shoots, they get old)

almostcrimes, freakin 2400, 4.0 is pretty awesome, I would love to have those scores.

I have found Yale applicants to be pretty authentic, which reinforces why want to be there. Good luck all!!!

You know, I have to agree with 2010emily. Despite still being CC (which is, you know, pretty ugh), Yale applicants do seem pretty genuine. I mean, it’s CC, so there are a lot of egos lying around, but I enjoy the company. I’m excited about Yale. But then again, I’m really not getting attached (it only has a 7% acceptance rate and my application is no more than average if not below), so…
