2014 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Got a Silver Key for the one story I submitted. I’m a little disappointed, but only because I’m such a perfectionist! There were only 5 winners of any prize for writing that came from my state, including me.

Only got a Silver Key for the memoir I submitted. My fault for procrastinating, but I’m not too disappointed. :stuck_out_tongue: Never got an email personally, just looked it up.

I only got one silver key this, a little bit disappointed. In the past I have submitted less pieces and still always got a gold key for one of them. Oh well, it seems like my region was really critical in the fiber and jewelry categories (I know other people who did much worst this year than in the past).

Is there anyone in the Eastern Pennsylvania area? I still haven’t gotten an e-mail saying if I won anything. I talked to the university in charge of our regional program and I was told that I will be mailed the notification this week. I just thought it was weird that they do this since all of you have gotten it by e-mail.

@Erinner - You didn’t give much detail in your post, but if you’re in the Pittsburgh region and competing in writing, the list is up here https://www.wpwp.pitt.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/2014-Scholastic-Winners.pdf

1 gold key, 2 silvers, 1 hm in northeast WRAL. I went to NY sophomore year when I won a gold medal: hoping for a repeat!

Also, don’t wait for the email, just check the website.

2 gold keys and 3 silvery keys for prose! it’s amazing how different this year is going from last year, in which i just got hm for a poem

@mickyleib, I entered for visual arts, I received the letter from the mailman today. I think they do it differently in our area. They don’t e-mail us the notification apparently. I was worried because everyone else on here was getting their notification by e-mail and I got nothing, not even on the website, so I thought I didn’t win anything. XD But it’s all good now, thank you for the help. Also, congrats to all winners. :)

Does anybody know the difficulty of receiving a gold or silver medal beyond regionals (after gold key)?

For those who had participated in previous years, have you got more or less awards this year than you got in your previous years?
My D went to a very good writing camp last summer. All her friends and herself feel that they got less awards than they did in previous year. One girl got national golden medal last year, and this year she used the same writing to build a profile, but the profile did not won anything at regional level. Is this year much more competitive than before?

TheAnomalist I’m wondering the same thing. I think about 5-7% of Gold Key winners get national recognition (correct me if I’m wrong). But the judging seems really random

Do any Northeast WRAL people know whether we’re mailed letters or not? (and if our teacher gets a letter too?)
Still haven’t gotten a letter though I did win a few gold keys

I’m in NE WRAL and letters usually come way later…they’re slow

@TheAnomalist: Statistically, about 9-10% of all gold keys receive some type of medal.

Btw, I’m from the NYC region, and I haven’t gotten any type of notification. I saw my results on the NYC Scholastic website. I got 10 gold keys in poetry & flash fiction, as well as a gold key for writing portfolio! I got a couple silver keys and honorable mentions as well in poetry, short story, memoir and flash fiction. :] Really excited for March 17th!

competitions aare relly rndom arent they?

For those of you who got to Carnegie in previous years: What’s the experience like? Are your plane ticket and hotel room paid for, or do you have to pay yourselves? How many days is it? (Just curious)
 Good luck to everyone! Fingers crossed!

Today I received my certificates and gold/silver key pins! Praying for good news on the 17th of March. :)

@cecewithapen It’s so intense! They don’t pay for travel stuff, far as I’m aware, but they give you a discounted rate at a nearby hotel. I think there are 2 days of activities. First day is arrival, check-in (you get your beautiful shiny medal), and ceremony (I think), and the next day(s) are workshops and readings. It was so stressful (at least for me, when I was years younger) that I would like to go again simply so I can enjoy the spectacle more.

@kitkat522 thanks!

It seems like they never give out all Gold keys–they always seem to give out a good mix of Golds and Silvers for people who submitted multiple things, at least in the writing category. (I got 2 Golds and 1 Silver, short story and science fiction/fantasy categories respectively) This seems a bit off if the submissions are judged purely on quality. Wouldn’t someone who’s really incredible get all Golds for their pieces (not saying that’s me, just in general)? I haven’t seen anyone get all Gold, unless they submitted only one or two pieces. Do they do this so someone who was amazing but submitted 40 pieces wouldn’t dominate the Nationals pool?
