2014 Spring Transfer Thread

Fish,
I’m applying for first time also so I don’t know for sure, but here’s some admitted transfer GPA data from 2010.

Your GPA looks like it is competitive with COLA’s 3.58 average, especially with your record and essays. Good luck.

@ thanhngyuencs: thank you!! it’ll be funnier if i get accepted but if i don’t… haha oops
i think i’m good tho. applying to COLA w/ 3.81 gpa. fingers are crossed. good luck all.

Crap, now I’m scared. I have a 3.5 something gpa… o.O But I did apply to COLA, so I’m hoping I still get in. AH.

I have a question…when transferring, does UT look at your cumulative GPA or do they only calculate the transfer GPA which they consider when accepting you?

Llama,
I think it depends on why the course is not transferable. If it was a vocational or remedial course, then the grade doesn’t affect UT’s transfer GPA calculation. But if it doesn’t transfer because the grade was below a C-, then UT still considers it when calculating the transfer GPA.

Also, I think it counts for transfer GPA if it has a transferable equivalent at UT even if it doesn’t apply to your degree plan. For instance, College Algebra does not count for UT degree credit, but it is still “transferable” because it has an equivalent course (M301) at UT. I think some calculus, history and government courses are treated similarly (may not count for degree or prerequisite credit but still be transferable).

However, I’m just a transfer applicant like you, so you should contact UT Admissions to be sure. Or maybe someone with more experience, like DeeGee, could weigh in. In any event, here’s the link that I read.

Red,

I have two courses that we as freshman in college were required to take and they do not transfer over, so that’s why I was wondering which GPA UT looks at. I just hope I have a good chance of getting it.

But thank you! I will call them and make sure.

I’m trying to get a waiver fee for my application. If it comes later than the 7th, but I have everything else in on time is that ok?

Has anyone been accepted or denied yet??

I just talked to an admissions counselor and found out my GPA is a little lower than I calculated (a 3.358 as opposed to a 3.4). I am applying to COLA- Anthropology and my second choice is Undergraduate Studies. What is the shoe-in GPA for Undergraduate Studies? I’m thinking that is my only hope now.

@UTAdreamer
I don’t think they have started rolling out admissions yet. I was reading the forums from last year and the year before and I saw that ut started rolling them out first - second week of November and by college, I think COLA was first followed by CNS.

Fingers crossed, hope we all get in!

Don’t they use the GPA your institution gives you in order to accept you? How is it lower?

Oh sorry, I am going through the fresh start program. My gpa was always displayed with my scores prior to 10 years ago so I had to calculate it myself.

UGS is competitive because of limited spots due to freshmen having priority. Usually a 3.5 will get you into UGS comfortably.

And they look at both your cumulative and transferable GPA. The transferable is always lower because less classes are counted towards your major. That’s why I suggest a major that you have all A’s in, they look for that.

deegeeerbear how can i see my transfer GPA?

Thanks, Dee.

My next question would be: Are all majors within the COLA equally easy/hard to get into? Would anthropology be easier or more difficult than, say, any other major within COLA? Or are all the majors on a pretty level playing field?

Dee,

Which GPA is more effective in the decision making process? The cumulative gpa or the transfer GPA?

Yeah I’m worried about that as well^

Wombar: some Cola majors are more competitive than others. The most competitive cola majors is psychology (a lot of cap students pursue this). You’re better off doing history, which was my back up, or a language type study. Anthropology does not sound uber competitive, I think a 3.5 would suffice.

As far as the cumulative vs. the transferable GPA, the transfer one will make or break you. If you’re not faring well in courses for your selected degree, why would UT want you? Basically, the classes like your major classes should be all A’s. All of my PR/ Communications courses were A’s along with only one B in speech. I had a 3.84 cumulative and didn’t have a problem getting my first choice school.

Dee,

Ok so now I’m worried. I applied COLA to Psych… it’s most competitive you said. Will 3.8 1 still be okay? … My essays are not that great. Arghh.
