2014 Spring Transfer Thread

I wonder if they already looked over my application. If so, I wonder what they thought of it. I really want to be a part of the physics program at UT!!

Does anyone know how difficult the College of Education is to get admitted to?

Also!! Does the admissions committee actually consider your 2nd choice major if you’re not admitted into the first? I feel like once you’re denied your 1st major choice, they’re like “Uh no, too bad!” Lmao!

Hi I have been lurking on this thread for quite a while. The thing is I am international and I heard that its very difficult for international students to get admitted. I am applying to COLA for International relations my gpa is 3.60. I am worried because I messed up last semester I had a perfect gpa for three semesters then last spring I got two C’s and ended up with a 2.8. My toefl is not great too I got a 87.

I’m not applying to it, but CoE is exceptionally difficult to be admitted to, but if you have good grades you should be able to get into the second choice.

Don’t listen to the absurd standards set on this site about what it takes to get into this school. The standards vary by any number of factors. No GPA will eliminate you, but reality is with a 2.8 the rest of your application is going to have to be EXCELLENT. Resume, essay, recommendations are going to have to be top notch to have any chance. I’m in the same boat, my GPA is not good, but my GPA on transferrable coursework is passable. I have a few things working in my favor, however, including a recommendation from a current UT professor. You need to have something unique to get the attention of whoever is reading your folder.

Just remember that despite what admissions may say to you (I was told to my face that my application wasn’t going to be considered), the school does read every file. Thanks to Fischer v. UT, a lot on how decisions are made has been made public in Supreme Court documents. They give consideration to everything.

I really want to believe what you say about UT having to review each application (I also have a GPA below 3.0, ~2.9 to be exact). However I am trying my best to be realistic, as much as it sucks. I also was told that my application would not be considered, which to me makes sense. UT gets THOUSANDS of applications, I mean they have an undergrad pop. of almost 50,000 students last time I checked. It would not surprise me if they filtered out applications by only looking at those with above a 3.0 GPA, even then I imagine they would still have thousands to look at within a short time frame (since deadline was Oct 1st)

I apologize and I hate to be negative Nancy, but I would rather be pleasantly surprised by not anticipating to get in and getting in, rather than hoping to get in and getting denied. Right now I am making alternative plans and bracing myself for the worst, I don’t want to get crushed with my incoming denial. I truly do hope you get in, I’m sure you are a great candidate.

I hate to be a downer on anyone, but I applied for Spring 2013 as an entry-level computer science major (2nd choice was UGS). First off, I am a born and raised Texan and my sister graduated from UT suma cum laude in 2010 which is what inspired me to go back to school. I was core completed (previously finished associates degree and workforce program in computer hardware/software), and had recently went back to school and completed Biology 1&2 (NSM-level), Chemistry 1&2 (NSM-level), and Calculus 1, 2 & 3. I had all As in those classes, except a B in Cal 1. I was in Phi Theta Kappa and National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and served as a Chapter Officer for both organizations. I participated in PTK and SGA on the national level. I had 3 stellar LORs (PTK head advisor, calculus teacher, and an engineer/mentor) as well as a full single-spaced page of community service and another full page of professional experience directly related to computers/IT. I had 2 excellent essays (doesn’t everyone say their essays are excellent though, haha). My GPA was a 3.29 on 72 hours. Aside from a higher GPA, I don’t know what more I could have done to be “acceptable”… My application was denied.

This time around, I have completed an additional 12 hours of Math and Computer Science classes, also all A’s, and because of Fresh Start my GPA is now a 3.53 on 68 hours. I was awarded transfer scholarships from IEEE and Phi Theta Kappa this semester. Not sure what else I could possibly do to get accepted, I followed their transfer guidelines to the letter and have been regularly involved in my community.

I am anxiously awaiting a decision this year!

i just changed my 2nd major to undergraduate studies… and it now says that the admission committee accepted my major change. (i think it means they are still checking applicants)
…my first major is islamic studes (cola)
college currently enrolled: Lonestar community college
cumulative gpa: 3.45
transfter gpa: 3.56
letter of recomendation: 1 from my political science proffesor
essays: 2 (did my best on both of them)
resume: excellent
community service hours: more than 700
man… i am on the border of getting denied… however lets see what happens. :)

I called in and the lady picked up. I asked her about the status of my application and she didn’t say much but what I already knew. But, she did tell me (without me even asking) that most students will receive their admission decision this week. And she kept emphasizing MOST. So, that being said, many of us will start to receive decisions today, tomorrow, and Friday. And I’m saying this because we already know that school of education already gave out decisions earlier this week. Good luck everybody! All we can do is wait. Please post if you got accepted or denied as soon as you find out! Thanks! :)

WannaBeAtUT

I believe that your biggest problem was a really bad timing. UT over-admitted almost 1000 students in 2012 Freshman class, and since it was already very difficult to accommodate them (UT had to hire a lot of new lecturers for introductory classes and schedule a lot of classes in the evening to solve the capacity problem) students who applied for 2013 Spring transfer were hit very hard.

Do you know if they over admitted for Fall2013?

No, I read something somewhere that they denied admission to a record number of students.

I have a quick question. I called UT awhile back to ask what they calculated my gpa as. Is that the GPA they will use? And is that the cumulative or the transfer gpa?!

Yes, I am aware of that. My question was that, that GPA that’s in their system that they calculated, is that the “cumulative” GPA or the “transfer” GPA?

How do you even know what your GPA is in the system?

They use your current GPA to decide if you get accepted.

@Sekrim-So if we get our transcript in before the 20th, we don’t have to wait until after the break right?

Can anyone stat me plzz.Im gona paste my previous post cuz I didnt get any answer. I am international and I heard that its very difficult for international students to get admitted. I am applying to COLA for International relations my gpa is 3.60. I am worried because I messed up last semester I had a perfect gpa for three semesters then last spring I got two C’s and ended up with a 2.8. My toefl is not great too I got a 87.

Ya Ya, that may be true, but if you look at the school’s office of information and analysis enrollment results, the total enrolled population decreases by 2000-3000 students every spring. While there may be something to your statement, remember that at a huge school like Texas, it is often advantageous to apply for the spring as many first time students will drop-out/fail-out after the fall. What happened to the other responder may have been the function of something else.

BaylorGal,
You may be able to check your accepted transfer credits on UT’s Interactive Degree Audit page.
[Interactive Degree Audit | Office of the Registrar](Undergraduate Degree Planning - Texas One Stop - University of Texas at Austin)

Access login and password are the same as for status check.
On the next page click on the IDA 1.0 link in the first paragraph.
On the next page click on IDA Planner on the left menu.
On the next page click on “completed and registered courses” in the center menu.

YaYa

That’s some comforting news, I was surprised even with the lower gpa that I wasn’t accepted (with the average being ~3.6). Hopefully they’ll see the overall improvement and the directed efforts I put into my application and education in general. I didn’t hear back last year until the 2nd week of December, so it does seem that I held on for a good while before they ran out of spots. Fingers crossed, good luck to everyone!
