2015-16 Tuition Fees

My D is a sophomore at RH. Does anyone have the updated tuition fees for the 2015-16 school year?

I dont. But you can count on a rise in tuition similar to what happened last summer…as they often raise tuition and costs in the summer, after you are on the hook and too late to transfer. LOL. Well, its not funny actually. Been there and done that four years at FCRH.

They do try and adjust financial aid a bit. But that is helter skelter too…and can be infuriating.

It could be worse: it could be Sarah Lawrence or NYU! Good luck.

Thanks sovereigndebt:) Do you know if incoming freshman are given the actual tuition rates…I don’t remember from two years ago!

I know my daughter’s financial aid didn’t change one bit when the tuition went up from 43,000 to 44,450this past year. The amount of student loans went up. But the grant stayed the same and she had to maintain a certain average to keep her scholarship.
They’ll probably announce it sometime around June 1.

Mom…yep. Been there too! They consider loans part of financial aid and its LUDICROUS.

But Fordham is not alone. There is going to be an education revolution very soon in our country. The bubble will burst.

In the meantime we all have to endure. And pray that our kids get good jobs and are financially able to repay their loans. Mine did.

I hope that bubble bursts within two years. I have a HS sophomore starting to look at colleges…

Does anyone know if Fordham has a board that oversees costs? When I picked my D up for Easter Break, all of the flood lights on the football field were on in the middle of the day. This is a very costly and unnecessary expense. More needs to be done to control expenses and hopefully keep the tuition from rising too much each year.

Unfortunately, rising tuition is a staple for colleges, regardless of how much ‘control’ there is on spending. Now, they could stop doing unnecessary building and extensions, which would definitely cut back the costs. However, rising tuition goes at any of the colleges, most at similar rates as Fordham, so there’s no way it’s really going to stop.

My son was accepted to Fordham. We just received the paperwork. Tuition, room and board is $63,667! I wish I could say that’s ridiculous (which it is) but I think the “final four” choices are in the 60,000 range, so it seems to be the trend. I just don’t know how much higher these tuitions can rise before people have to say NO MORE!

Momtoo3, would you be able to share the cost of the tuition portion for 2015-16

As much as I like Fordham, please consider your state school or cheaper options. In my opinion, no college is worth more than half of Fordham’s total cost. Might suck not to go to your dream school, but being poor for years after you graduate sucks more.

Like all schools, Fordham substantially discounts the cost to attend through financial aid, either by scholarships or university grants. Very few pay the full cost. When you look at your offers from all the schools, compare costs and your goals and what you can reasonably afford and finance through loans.

I dont recommend taking on 100k in student loans over four years. But 30k, the national average, is fine. Dont forget if you are working in NYC after graduation you salaries will be higher and you have ten years to pay off loans.

It is daunting. And a very personal decision for each family. Good luck to all of you.

Happy Easter and Passover to everyone.

Of course @sovereigndebt, The tuition and fees are $47,317 for next year. We are one of the lucky “who pay full cost” for Fordham. He didn’t receive a scholarship, which was surprising to us, and we do not qualify for any financial aid (own two businesses, not because of wealth - I guess I can sell my business to send him to school?) He’s our third to go to school so we know the drill…no aid, just high interest loans. Fordham is probably #3 on his list, with BU and Bentley (daughter graduated last year) in the lead. All of them are in the 60K range. While its overwhelming to look at the four year cost, we just take it year by year. Our daughter graduated with lower than the national average of debt, but now is taking on some more for graduate school - we just cannot provide for that. Her current employee will pay her back $5500/year over 5 years, so that’s at least somewhat helpful, for as long as she’s there. I think Fordham is a great school and a beautiful campus with great proximity to NYC, however he’s got it at #3. We head to Boston this week to do two accepted students days and see if he feels closer to a decision. If not we will visit Fordham in the weeks to come. I think from the three on his list, there is not a bad choice. Best of luck to all as this is an extremely stressful time if their lives.

I agree its a stressful time for everyone. We all want what is best for our kids and want them to get what they yearn for. Its heartbreaking when they have to make tough decisions and go elsewhere, or worse, dont get in at all.

At some level, what school you go to matters less than what you do with what you learn and how mature you are and your work ethic. Nobody walks the hallways at work bragging on their alma mater unless they want to be shunned and maybe fired. (sports is an exception!).

There are people at Fordham who have the income to afford full cost. But they are few and far between. A very high percentage are on scholarship or financial aid.

My kid graduated at the top of her class at Fordham and then went to Boston for graduate school. She has debt, but is working and doing just fine. The key is to not assume too much debt as to make it unmanageable.

Its also important to do very well in undergraduate school so you can get into the best graduate and professional programs. That is a subjective decision. Not one answer fits all.

BU is a good school and its very urban, in downtown Boston. Its more akin to NYU, than Fordham or BC. People I know who went there loved it. My kid loved Boston.

I am big believer that the students must own this decision, their first as an adult which impacts their lives. And its time for parents to start the process of stepping back…easier said than done. Going to Fordham was my kid’s primary decision, and we only gave her the support and pointed out the good and the bad for each school.

Happy Easter.

@walkbyfaith8-did you get the letter today regarding tuition increase? Got ours. $46K+.

Freshman cost estimator we rec’d w/admission:

Costs in the 2015-16 year:

Estimated Cost of Attendance $67,517 / yr
Tuition and fees $47,317
Housing and meals 16,350
Books and Supplies 1,012
Transportation 964
Other education costs 1,874

The year my kid applied to Fordham the listed tuition from the prior year was just shy of 30k. We entered at 32k or so. It went up 2-3k a year. And has continued to do so every year. Room/Board was fairly stable…11-12k, but now I see they have upped that ante to 16k. Its daunting.

But if you look at a lot of lower ranking schools…including private Jesuit schools, they have also risen dramatically. Some schools give better scholarships and financial aid than Fordham. I have heard Marquette and SLU do much better with that.

Every student and family has to decide what is in their best interests.

I do note that some graduate MBA programs are going to night schools and executive programs because a very high percentage of MBA applicants now keep their jobs and get tuition paid by the employers.

Ditto for some law students.

PhD programs are normally fully funded with a stipend of 25-30k a year for “student teaching”. So its the M.A. and M.S. degree students who pay the freight at graduate schools normally. Something to think about.

DO NOT GO TO FORDHAM AND TAKE ON ENORMOUS DEBT. What that level is for you, is subjective and depends on your career path.

I know someone who went to Duke and then medical school and had over 200k in total student loans…but being a physician now, handily paid it down and almost paid off. So there are exceptions for careers like that.

Yes, I received the tuition, technology and general fees but not the cost of room and board for Wash where she will be dorming next school year. To save money we are not taking the meal plan. She will be cooking in her apt. with her roommates and will use her declining balance card on campus when she doesn’t have time to cook.

The dorm is called, “Walsh.” Does anyone know the 2015-16 fee for this dorm?

all dorms are the same, except as to size. Walsh is an apartment and you share space with roomies. Freshmen dorms have triples and they are cheaper because of smaller space. Walsh is also normally upperclassmen.
