2015-2016 Laptop Package

So, I was wondering if any current RPI students had any idea about what laptop model this upcoming year’s mobile computing package will be based on.

I know that there was a fair where they showed off a few options, but haven’t heard about which ones students liked the most. Does anybody have any idea?

This might help:

They don’t have the Fall 2015 package together yet. Seems a bit lightweight for an engineering school, but likely more complex calculations would be through the network anyway.

I had one of the T440s for personal use, the hard drive crashed, so backup early and often if they go with that model again. Also, Lenovos exchange data with China (I found out later) so some people don’t like that, another reason I’m surprised they went with it.

Sorry that you haven’t had a good experience with the t440s. I think their t440s model has a solid state disk, so maybe that’s a bit more reliable. If not, oh well.

Anyways, I found a reddit thread on it. It looks like students want the x1 carbon, which may be a bit expensive, but would be pretty sweet.

Where I work, I can choose from several models, and I always choose the best one even if it is a little heavier. If you figure the laptop should last you four years, try to get the best option you can.

My son likes his current laptop, so may use the RPI one for school work and his current one for gaming. Although we’d be tempted to let him do both on his current laptop which is pretty powerful. Maybe get him a tablet to take to classes.

Any thoughts on a new MacBook Pro, running Windows 7 in Boot Camp? Anyone anticipate any compatibility issues?

I don’t think so. They say to at least have Windows 7, so it should be good. I’d ask, just to make sure.
