2016 - 2017 USC Transfer

Hi everyone.

I applied as a transfer, I was rejected last year. My SAT scores were too low, and my essays were horrible. This year my essays are much better. For my Common App transfer essay, I spoke about how much I have improved, and how much I have grown since last year, and all I have learned, and wish to learn, and do with what I have learned. I also spoke about how much USC means to me.

This year I am transferring with a 3.86 (at time of application - I applied in September because I am doing an art program), I moved up to a 3.9 when I sent my winter grades. I hope to move up to a 3.95 after this semester. I have most of the GE done, depending on which GE requirements they chose to look at for me. My extra’s were good. I only sent on rec.

If anything, I hope my essays will pull me though.

Good luck everyone!

@silvermansachs I will have completed Calc 1 by this spring and I will be a human biology major

@silvermansachs I’ll be done with Calc 2 after this semester

@victory1 Honors Scholar, three officer terms (ICC, Treasurer, VP of Service) for an honors club (honors program awareness + highschool outreach to encourage students to go to college), student mentor for autistic college students, tons of volunteer hours from various orgs (Reading to Kids, LAWorks, etc). // It’s less of how many ECs you have, but what you have done and how long you have been a part of it.

Generally, yes (as I’ve heard from other students). I live on the northern side of campus and my major classes are also on this side so I typically don’t go to the southern part of campus to “experience” the difference myself, haha.

@karinalglz I think you do have a shot, but I would assume they’ll ask a SGR from you to make sure you are still trending upward. Did you select an alternative major? Also, 3.0 is definitely on the lower end so I would assume you may have some explanation for that? I personally think that ECs have a little more weight than what others are saying, but grades are definitely the priority regardless. From a fellow first gen student/active volunteer, I wish you the best of luck and fight on!

Has anyone taken 2-3 sports classes?

@victory1 I will be taking 3 during the spring term. I’m a junior transfer on a quarter system, and I’ve finished all my pre-recs. I’m using them to fill up my schedule to remain full-time.

Was the deadline for international transfer students February 1st as well?

What are the chances of transferring to the computer science major at usc with a GPA of 3.8 and all the recommended courses done, 30 units ? I have no EC:s. Also, are you competetive for the transfer scholarship with a 3.8 gpa?

@Yuanqii Yes, all transfers have the same deadline.

@Lstrom Your above the transfer GPA. You should be good to get in. Remember, USC looks mainly at GPA and even they stress that as well.

what would be relatively easier major to get in? and what would be the expected GPA for those easy majors?

I’m planning on transferring from UC Santa Cruz to USC Fall 2016 as a Sophomore.

What are my chances?

Major: CS at Viterbi

HS GPA: Not too great.

Essays: Could have been way better. Just talked about how USC had many clubs and great learning opportunities (why transfer), why I want to improve lives using Computer Science and how majoring in CS can give me the skills needed (why you chose this major), how I had to collab for a concert because it was important to work with other people to perform the best (engineering collab essay), how YouTube was a very useful site (What is your favorite website) , how I was involved in auditioning for acappella (what is your non-academic pursuit).

Definitely talked about interest in going there and the interest of doing accapella at usc

College GPA: 4.0 (2015 Fall Quarter)

Coursework at UCSC

Took a java programming class, Differentiable Vector Calc class, music history class during fall quarter.

Currently taking intro to mechanics, Intro to networking, and Crown Writing Core

Planning to take Data Structures (if i get in), Integral Vector Calculus (may drop the class if workload becomes too hectic), Discrete Math, and Writing 2

Units:

19 (Fall 2015)
16 (Winter 2016)
22 (Spring 2016)

Recommendation letters: none

@victory1 it seems like you wanna get in usc the easy way. Easier majors would be something no one would pick, like Asian studies, Gender & Sexuality studies, etc. I’m assuming it’s easier to get in because not as many applicants will be applying for that major and is therefore not impacted. You still need a high gpa to get admitted, dont expect a 3.2 gpa to ensure your acceptance.

@pomeranian4rich Well USC is a private institution, I don’t think any of their majors are “impacted”. Some are just by nature more completive, based on the coursework.

I am a political science major and am on the TTP. I got a 4.0 last semester and am worried about how rigorous my course load has been the past semester and current semester.

Fall Semester
RHET 110
Intro to American Politics
Intro to Sociology
French 1

Spring Semester
RHET 120
Intro to International Politics
Art Appreciation
French 2

Over this next summer, I plan on taking astronomy and college algebra to fulfill my science and math credits for USC, but I didn’t mention it in my USC application at all. Would it be a good idea to email my USC TTP counselor and mention that? What do you guys think?

So I’m gonna have a W on my transcript for withdrawing from Calc (long story, but my teacher is terrible) and my counsellor basically told me this severely lowers my chances of acceptance since Calc is essential to my science major. Worst day ever.

Hello!

I was admitted a Sophomore transfer (one year transfer) last year with a 3.75 - 3.8ish GPA into Marshall. I am a Fall Admit and I transferred from a CC and transferred after my first year out of high school. Shoot me a message if you have any questions!

@KELLYYYY i’m sorry to hear that :frowning: unfortunately calculus is a very important class because it is the fundamental ground for most science majors, and other majors like business and accounting. If you haven’t dropped your calculus class yet, i suggest that you find a tutor or find some calculus videos on youtube. There are plenty of resources in todays technology so use it well! wish you best of luck.

@pomeranian4rich oh trust me I go to a tutor every day haha but i don’t really have a choice and unfortunately the math department at my school is known for being very bad. If i had a great high school record and am on the TTP, had a 4.0 the first semester and will still get all A’s other than this one W, do you guys think it’s really gonna impact my admission decision that much? I’m trying to stay positive but I don’t want to hold on to any false hope

@KELLYYYY that’s a very unfortunate situation to be in… I dont know if you can still explain your reason to the admission counselor, but I think they will try to understand any possible reasons you did so well except for that one calculus class. They might let it slide because of your previous performance in high school/first semester of college and being in the TTP. Just don’t worry much about it and try to aim for an A in all your other classes.
