Official USC 2015 Transfer Thread

The 2014 Transfer thread was very helpful to me this past year. I thought it would be a great idea to start the 2015 thread for you guys. This forum truly helped answer some of my questions. It was a place where I came to vent, when I was frustrated with the whole admissions process.

I will be attending USC this fall as a business major.

Good Luck guys.

Fight On!!

I am planning on transferring to USC for fall 2015 and I was wondering if you have any tips for 2015 USC transfer applicants?

Also, I have a few questions on the Common App. For the mid term grades form and the other supplemental forms required by Common app, do I have to turn them in?

I will be applying for Computer Science or CECS as a Junior (if they take the credits). My schedule for this fall is a little overboard but it covers a lot of the stuff to hopefully get me in. I’m done with the writing requirement, I will have three semesters of foreign language after this semester (although not required). I didn’t know I wanted to come to USC until after taking a year of easy classes to fulfill the AA degree, so I’m trying to stack all of the USC requirements into this fall/next spring. I have completed 33 credit hours with a 4.0, and a 4-credit remedial class with a B, which doesn’t count towards my GPA or college level credit but I think it is on my transcript.

This fall I will be taking:
Calculus I (5)
Beginning C++ (CS requirement) (3)
Programming Logic (C++ Co-req) (3)
Sociology (USC Diversity Req) (3)
Intro Chem/Lab (I need two semesters of a lab based science) (4)
Western Art (Hopefully will fulfill Cat V Arts/letters) (3)
Spanish 201 (Not required but I want to do it) (4)

That’s 25 credit hours but I really only have to worry about C++, Chemistry, and Calculus (which I already started studying). I already know most of the stuff that we will be learning in Spanish 201. Soc/Art can’t be that hard.

You guys have your fall/spring planned out with the intention of transferring?

I might apply USC just because but it really is above my afford costs. Your schedule seems so impacted, I don’t know how you can fit in so much. I barely have enough room in the day and I have to give up a bit to get paid as I tutor in school.
My planned schedule is:
(Fall)
Fund. Of CS C++ 4 units
Assembly Language 4 units
Gen. Physics. II 5 units

(Spring)
Fund. Of CS Java 4 units
Gen. Physics III 5 units
Fund. Of CS Data Structures 4 units
Independent Study for CS ( to actually apply to a solo project what Ive learned)

The three classes that are a toss up are Differential Equations, Gen. Chem 1, and Applied Logic Design.

I’m going to be applying for the fall of 2015, Im currently at a community college hoping to transfer in as a sophomore what’s the lowest GPA u can have to be considered for a business major? I heard it was 3.8 but some people say 3.5

i heard 3.5 ForeverGymnist21

Hey guys. I’m applying from a community college in NC for Fall 2015. I have a 4.0 GPA, will have 41 units by the time I apply, and I’m applying as a communications major. I will have all GE’s except one (possibly, not sure), diversity req, and foreign language reqs completed I believe. Taking 17 units this semester, many of which are USC reqs.

My EC’s are as follows:

2x President’s list

Started a sports blog that I’ve been active on

Job for two years. Received a promotion in March 2014.

Phi Theta Kappa member

In HS, I was an FBLA member. I helped organize and participated in a fundraiser for veterans.

Roughly 100 hours of volunteering listed on application through my church, spread out between a soup kitchen and a retirement home. (During high school)

What are my chances? Thanks guys!

For a business major trying to transfer in as a sophomore is it required to take an Econ class or can that be taken at USC?

I’m applying to 7 schools for Fall 2015 as a computer science transfer (a lot haha, I didn’t really know where I wanted to go as a freshman so I just went to my state university).

I finished all of the requirements my freshman year except for the 2 lab based sciences (I’ll be taking calculus based physics this year). I am wondering about the C++ recommendation though. I don’t think there’s a single C++ class at my university. Nevertheless, I spend a large majority of my time building applications and the like, and already know C++ (and a lot more).

I forgot to include my schedule for this year (quarter system):
Fall: Calc Phys I, CS I, Interm Macroec, Calc III
Winter: Calc Phys II, CS II, Intro Econometrics, MATH
Spring: Calc Phys III, CS III, Intro Game Theory, MATH

I’m not sure what to do for MATH. At my current university, it is required to take discrete math I and II (math for computer science as some schools call it) in order to move past CS III and take classes like linear algebra, however, I don’t think any of the schools I am applying to even recommend discrete math for cs transfers, but some recommend linear algebra. I could take a differential equations class, multivariable calc, or intro to proof class (all of these are upper division math, while discrete is not). I’d be really interested to hear your opinions on this matter if you are considering Viterbi.

@JMag95 I contacted Viterbi a while back and they said that while C++ is recommended, it is not required. I bet your CS classes will show that you are a good candidate for the program. My CC has no classes like “CS I, CS II, CS III” so I’m taking C++. If you want to do more math, CS majors end up having to take differential equations, linear algebra and one other high end course like probability theory. However, diff equations and linear algebra are combined in one class at USC. So if you only took one of the two you would likely still have to take the class with both. I might take Linear Algebra next spring or summer (if I can fit it in my schedule) just to make it easier.

@Numbersz‌ That is very helpful, thank you. It would have been silly of me to take just differential if I would basically have to retake it after enrolling. I guess I’ll just stick to the discrete math since i don’t have any other options (don’t really see the point in taking multivariable). Hopefully they don’t look down upon it since it is considered “lower” than calculus.

I was going through the last years Transfer thread and someone posted that if you did poorly in High School but got around a 3.8 in your first year of college there still might be a chance of rejection because of your high school status and they want to see 2 years of good college transcripts , is that true? I thought if you have 30 transferable units by the end of spring and a 3.7 GPA USC would disregard your high school transcripts and SAT/ACT score

@ForeverGymnast21‌ I would be surprised. I don’t think 1 year of college coursework is significant enough to completely disregard high school. I did a lot of searching on this topic last year (my freshman year) because my high school resume is not impressive at all. I decided to wait until after my sophomore year, because my freshman year went really well (3.99, upper division math and econ, work 30 hrs/wk, dean’s list 2 quarters). I have seen quite a few schools say you don’t have to submit high school transcripts or standardized test scores if you are applying as a junior transfer, however, if you are applying as a sophomore, I’m pretty sure 100% of schools want high school information.
TL;DR: If they ask for high school stuff, they consider it.

Thank you for that information! I am planning on transferring in as a sophomore, my high school transcripts aren’t horrible but there not up to USC standards, here’s hoping for the best!

@JMag95 What other schools are you applying to? You may try talking to someone at your school and see if you can get away from the discrete math if it doesn’t help you transfer. Honestly anyone should be able to take Calc I-III, differential equations, and linear algebra without being required to take discrete math…

Georgia Tech, U Washington, Texas, UCSD, UC Berkeley. Yeah I actually took your advice ahead of time haha and asked yesterday. I am free to take differential and linear without taking what they call the “bridge requirement”. What all schools are you applying to?

Hi all. I hope I can help you all here with your quest to transfer to SC. A little bit about myself: I got in as a junior with around a 3.2? GPA into Marshall. I came from a crazy background (went to UC Davis as a chem major, did poorly there bc it’s too hard lol, and went to CC and raised my grades there). I hope I can chime in to help you all. Please feel free to PM me with anything (better option). Note: I applied to SC 3 times…also in HS. Not until the third time I got in. Hope you are all having a great summer so far!~

Thanks for offering to help, it really means a lot. I just wanted to ask you what you thought help you get in into USC, what do you think increased your chances of getting into USC?
