2016 - 2017 USC Transfer

@zettasyntax its good seeing you on this thread. I’ve been following this thread since last year and I remember seeing you on here a lot. How do you like USC so far? how would you compare it to UCLA?

Does USC have a limit on how many credits you can take on a given semester? I am currently taking 21 units this semester?

Does anyone know when transfer students start getting their decisions from USC? Could it be as early as end of April?

@imgonnagetin from what I remember decisions start from the end of April all the way to July

hey guys what’s your opinion on dropping a core class after applying?

I applied to Annenberg and I’m currently taking biology 101, intro to philosophy, algebra 1 and french 3 to meet a few more requirements this semester. All my classes are going good except bio it requires a lot of studying outside of class and because I’m taking my communications major courses, philosophy, math and french 3 I haven’t been able to give it as much time as I would have liked. I feel like I have a C in Bio and all other classes are a B and above.

Bio is a 4 credits class so a C would really bring down my GPA, and if I were to get an SGR I don’t think they would be too happy to see a C or its negative effect on my GPA which is currently a 3.47… I’m really not trying to risk this.

Would a W look bad in this case? I’ve never had a W before. Has anyone been accepted with a W on their transcript after an SGR before? Help!!

@thepinksun I was in the same situation where it was either get a C in a class or take the W. I called the admissions office and spoke to a counsellor and he told me that although they do not like seeing W’s on transcripts, they dislike C’s and D’s even more. Over all, he said one W will not make or break your application, anything more than that starts to look a little suspicious

@mr.transfer Yup, I like to talk :stuck_out_tongue: I’m definitely loving USC so far. The classes are great, but quite challenging. I also like how much there is to do if you’re a social person. I like to stop by this center for Hispanic students and it’s pretty cool, but I’m really shy, so I sorta blend in with the walls when I do stop by, but it’s fun. They brought in churros once and yeah, so Mexican-y and reminds me of where I live.

I can’t fairly compare USC to UCLA other than the transfer orientation process. It may have been just me, but I felt it was terrible compared to USC and lasted way longer than it had to. There were just so many things about it that I didn’t like. Oh, and since I’m no seasoned jogger, UCLA’s hills killed me lol :stuck_out_tongue:

As for USC placing limits on the units you can take during a semester, I don’t think they mind if you take a bunch (they’re probably more concerned if you take too few). I took 21 units once and they said nothing about it. Depending on the course load, they might even view it favorably if you’re able to manage it.

@zettasyntax thanks for the reply, glad to hear you’re enjoying USC. That gives me a good perspective of what to expect if I get enrolled. I am a business major with a 3.95 GPA. I already completed 31 units and I’m currently taking 21 this semester. 4 are GE classes and 2 are major requirements. I have tons of extracurricular activities as well as volunteer work and internship offer for this summer. I also started working since I was 14 and currently working and taking care of my family. I believe I have strong essays and couple good letter of recommendations. I am also a low income student. Can you chance me based on your experience on this thread. Thanks! #FightOn

Does anyone know if it is harder to transfer into Annenberg? I have a 3.93 GPA and put my first choice major as Broadcast Journalism

Thanks sooo much. Did you call the general admissions office or did you call your local counselor? @KELLYYYY

@happyhazelnut
I’m currently at Annenberg studying communication. During orientation last fall semester, the stats was something like only 8.5% out of about 800 applicants got accepted to Annenberg. I don’t know about the other orientation sessions but during my orientation, majority of the students were public relations or journalism majors.

@Joe211 I applied to Annenberg as communications! do you mind telling me your stats as a transfer?
I’m assuming Annenberg is really hard to get into? I’m really worried now…

does anyone know where we could find like a profile of admitted students per major or like their gpa’s and stuff? or is the general average 3.7 all we really get?

@anxiousmac I remember watching one of the transfer podcasts and they said something along the lines of most of the lower gpa’s coming from engineering/science/math majors.

I also think that some lower gpa’s also come from people transferring from 4 years, but no proof to back this up lol. I wish they were more specific with admitted statistics though.

@anxiousmac

Well I was in an unique situation because I’m a non-traditional student. I can tell you that on one hand my overall gpa barely cracks 2.0 if one calculate my grades from community college over a decade ago. Tons and tons of W and F. Though in my latest endeavor for education, in one year, I took 50 units and had a 4.0 while attending about four different community colleges.

The wait is killing me lol I have been scrolling through last year and this year’s transfer thread.

Most transfer students who applied to the UCs heard back already. Knowing some of my peers are transferring & I haven’t heard back just gives me anxiety attack.

Applied first choice to Marshall (Pre-Accounting) and second choice as Dornsife.
GPA: 3.9 but USC might have a different GPA on file since not all classes are transferrable.
Entering as Junior

Two months countdown until June 1st!!

@zettasyntax Thank you so much for addressing so many different questions and concerns of all the perspective transfer students! I saw all your posts from last year and this year’s thread!

@Joe211

Thank you for letting me know, I guess its just a waiting game then
If you don’t mind can you tell me your experience at Annenberg so far, how does it feel like going to the best school for journalism in the US?

Just got requested for extra information today, looks like they finally got to my application B-).

@thepinksun I spoke with John Marfield who was my counsellor while i was in high school
