2016 - 2017 USC Transfer

I’m planning on applying to USC fall of 2016 to the Price School of Policy,Planning, and Development. Last year I didn’t do so hot at my CC, but now I’m doing very well and hope to continue with this upward trend. However, I’m worried about not being able to fill the pre requisites. I can’t take Microecon until the summer term since i’m taking Pre-cal next semester and pre cal is a pre req at my school for microecon. Also another pre req is Math117 which is some sort of math for business at USC and my CC doesn’t really offer an equivalent. It’s kind of out of my control I guess but how much does the completion of Pre-reqs and GE’s weigh into the admission decision at USC?

HI, if i have a 2.559 will i get in to USC? if I’m completing another semester and have outstanding major extra-circulars over 1300 hours in community service, part of student government at community college, and I have two youth groups I help manage, Sunday school tutor, tutoring children for friends and family. From Fresno, CA too. Plus, reason why i had such a low gpa because my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and also, I had two losses in my family. Still managed to finish school, and take care of my siblings. I just need somebody to tell me there can be a slight chance.I need faith and prayers.

@furuh123

First off, I have to congratulate you on staying strong throughout such a challenging period in your life. Keep that spirit and good luck to your mother.

All that said I still woupd place your chances at doubtful. It wouldn’t hurt to apply but I would advise sticking around CC another year to bring your GPA up. Unless you have big bucks, a 2.6 GPA will not be enough for admission into any program offered by USC.

Some cal states might admit you with that GPA though. I would look into it.

So overall, depending on your major I might apply, but the best choice for you is to probably spend an extra year at CC bringing up that GPA.

@furuh123 I suggest you complete one year with grades in an upward trend. Shoot for 4.0 for each term since your current ~2.5 does not allow forgiveness for anything less than straight A’s. If you’re not willing to wait another year, build a strong application. EC’s should reflect your personality, interests, and major. Otherwise, you’ll seem like you’re overcompensating for your grades. You’ll also have to explain the reason behind your poor grades. Take as much responsibility for it as possible because we all have life–misfortunate, surprises, et cetera–to deal with. Good luck!

@theloveclub try to enroll in those classes at a different CC. Microecon is one the most common courses offered at any college, and it won’t bode well if you haven’t completed it as a prereq. It’s also a lower division course, and assuming that you get in, why would you wanna spend your money/time taking at a university? The most competitive applicants have completed all of the lower division prereqs/major requirements and most of their GEs. Gaps in progress + history of poor or mediocre grades is gonna hurt. Good luck!

@trojanwoman I will try to see if i can get into it somewhere else. I’m just worried that USC will only see that I’ve done one of the pre reqs and assume I don’t plan on completing the other one. I do plan on it but I just have to finish math first haha. Most of my GE’s are completed…I’ve tried to take classes that are the equivalent of USC’s. Thanks!

Also i’m super worried that my W’s will be a huge turnoff. Last year I was in the graphic design program and realized it was not for me and dropped 2 classes. Then I was in another class that was called college transfer success or something. It’s really just something you have to take if you wanna transfer to a uni here in NC (which I don’t). I don’t know how to explain that to admissions. I don’t even think those classes would have even transferred…not that they mattered. It’s not like I dropped something important like English or Psych. Anyone have experience with having W’s?

@theloveclub every undesirable set of grades should be explained. Try to be preventative and when you can’t, address the situation. A few Ws (> 3) don’t mean much if all the other grades you’ve received are excellent. In a sense, getting a W in an “important” class, like English writing, may be better because you’d eventually have to retake it. More than a few Ws exhibits a pattern. Again, it warrants explanation. “It wasn’t for me” is not sufficient. Maybe bridge the gap between realizing graphic design was not interesting you, whereas, whatever major you’re studying now, is something that makes you feel passionate.

@trojanwoman I considered making my essays about how i thought i absolutely wanted to do graphic design, but with the help of a professor i found city planning was my niche. I will definitely address the mistakes i make last year.

@mochibbycake just a quick question! Since you had to take classes at USC that are requirements to get into your major were you still admitted into the upper division program, or are you still considered lower division? Just curious as I’m applying to Global Business. I will have completed all necessary requirements and GEs to be admitted into Dornsife, but I don’t have a course equivalent to an International Relations class. So I guess my question is, would they still admit me into dornsife and allow me to take that class if I was admitted?

@TroyUSC2016 Yes, if you don’t have a course equivalent at your CC, it’s okay! I could only take one “major” course for Sociology. There aren’t really a lot of reqs for my major specifically so I’m pretty much going to be taking both upper division courses and some lower division (because some GEs must be taken at USC).

anyone on here applying to be an international relations major? i know for international relations (global business) requires that you take economics but does anyone know if regular IR majors have to take that as well?

does anyone know if it is harder to get directly admitted into marshall as a transfer? or is it the same as any other major.

Majors are difficult to get into depending on how many people apply, its most likely harder since its business and USC is well known for it.

Anyone knows if a W will affect transfer admissions? Let’s say I drop an honors seminar with a W, retake it and get an A. How will USC consider it? Will they factor in the W as a D and count that into my transfer gpa?

@nerdbomb I would say one W isn’t going to make or break you…let’s just say that if they reject you it won’t be because of a W. If you have a few W’s (like me lol )then it doesn’t look so hot. But if you aren’t going to pass the class, drop it rather than fail it. D’s will do some damage to one’s GPA, thus hurting their chances of admission. I’d rather save my GPA than worry about a W. Things happen, it’s rare to not have W’s. Just don’t make it a habit…like I did

Anyone else applying as a rising sophomore (a first semester freshman right now)?

Me. Though I’m going to be a high credit sophomore transfer. I’d have only a couple credits to do the summer before transferring to be a junior.

I’m applying to Marshall but I’m not sure if I have everything I need to tranfer classes wise. I’ve completed igetc for UCs and just now realized I want to see if I can get into USC so I only have 2 GEs done and for the major pre req I only have accounting classes done (only classes that equivalents for my cc) and that’s about it. Will it hurt my chances?
I have a 3.8
3.8 gpa Major:
300 hour of community service
A bunch of awards from city/senate/legislature for my volunteer service
Won a schlorship for my community service
In marketing club at cc
Intern at a place that deals with international relations
First generation college student
The only thing I’m most worried about is not graduating in time if I get in bc I didn’t complete enough classes and it’s already an expensive school. Do they allow to take cc classes the summer before and while attending usc?
