2016 - 2017 USC Transfer

I graduated high school in 2014 and went straight to a four year private womens university in Los Angeles (that’s a mouth full). I’m from and live in Los Angeles. Anyway, I spent an entire school year there and hated it and took out way to many loans. I applied to USC as a global studies majors (I still am one) for fall 2015, unfortunately i was rejected. After finishing my year at the private school I transferred into two community colleges and am getting my AA degree in global studies and graduating next spring. My GPA right about now is around a 3.5-3.8 and will have about 84 units completed by the end of next spring. Bottom line, I really hope i get accepted into USC for fall 2016. Hopefully I get in this time around

Hey everyone! I’m a freshman at a CSU, a little about me, I had a horrible high school career decent SAT score of about 1750 but terrible GPA 2.61 (I know) Over the summer I did 9 credits at CSUF and my overall college gpa was around a 3.7. I’m doing 14 credits right now, will do 4 during an intermission, and will do 14 in the spring. It looks like I’ll finish the semester with a 3.71. I’m looking to apply to Dornsife as Undeclared. I’ll have all my requirements done/ in progress by the time I submit my app on Feb 1st except for the writing requirement which will be waived do to me going to a 4 year. Assuming I write a kick ass letter for the common app, and have two rec letters (One from a professor that likes me and one from a USC Alum that I’m very good friends with who knows people from Admissions and who’s father is pretty famous as he works in Politics (Can’t go much into detail to protect identity) I imagine receiving a spring grade request, If I can maintain my GPA do I have a fighting chance? Fight on!

I’m glad to see other people getting as excited as I am for the Fall 2016 transfer process!!

I spent my first semester at San Francisco State University, but as of Spring 2015 I have been a CCC student in the Los Angeles area.

My current GPA (cumulative) is 3.8, although if all goes as planned I will be able to raise it to a 3.89 by December.
High school academics were less than ideal (aka terrible): 3.01 GPA , 1850 SAT score …

ANYWAYS:

  1. I’m planning on applying as either a Business or Econ major. I would definitely prefer to focus in Business, but would choosing Econ increase my chances of getting in? and
  2. I am able to afford all expenses/tuition without aid or scholarships. Does that give me any sort of competitive edge?

Any and all advice is welcome.
Best of luck to the rest of you!

@sutt123 You get the option of choosing two majors so you can put Business as your top choice and Econ as your second. Econ IS easier to get into, but please remember the difference between the two majors and make sure that you’re okay with doing Econ if you cannot switch to Business when you’re a student (I know too many business students who chose Econ as a backup and then ended up regretting it when they got placed into Econ). USC is a bit lenient with switching majors (yay), but you still have to re-apply to the Business school and do well in your core classes in order for them to even consider you.

As for the second question, I have a hunch that it may help, but that’s just a guess! :stuck_out_tongue:

General advice: I definitely recommend you all get in touch with your admissions counselor!! They’re super helpful! Fight on!

@mochibbycake YAY that makes life a lot easier. I genuinely enjoy Business and Econ and would be happy with either. My preference was in regards to future employment options, but now that I think about it, graduating from one or the other wouldn’t make much of a difference.

I will make sure to schedule an appointment or two with an admissions counselor in the near future! Completely forgot about them, thanks for reminding me!

Also: does anybody know if they take high school scores heavily into account? Because mine suck.

@sutt123 Great!

I’ve never done appointments with them (not sure if you can or not). All of my communication was done via email. :slight_smile:

Also, if you’re a junior transfer, your high school scores don’t really matter (mine wasn’t so hot either). If you’re a sophomore transfer, then yes, they do matter.

@mochibbycake not sure whether this is the case for all CCCs, but mine (located in Los Angeles) has really good connections with Southern California schools. Representatives from each college come to our campus at least once a month, and students can schedule a block of time with them.
The university reps are literally the best thing since sliced bread… I had a meeting just last week with a UCLA rep.

I would check with your CC’s counseling/transfer counseling services to see if they offer something similar!

No USC reps visit my northern CCC :-/

@sutt123 I believe all CCs have uni reps, but my school didn’t have USC reps. :frowning: But yes, those are definitely helpful (I’ve met up with the UCLA one as well). I had to rely on my admission counselor since that was my only form of contact with USC.

I’m not too sure about my chances though, thoughts?

Hello,

I’m a freshman at Indiana University and am looking to transfer to USC. My HS grades were decent/sub par and my ACT score was a little bit sub par as well. Should I retake it over winter break or when I get the chance? I have 9 AP credits from HS (Micro, Macro, English). My HS EC’s were pretty good (started an investment club) and I’m in a few EC’s first semester here. I’m also working on starting my own hedge fund. I’m just going to try and kill it in all my classes and apply after first semester and hope for a SGR. Any tips/thoughts?

@nerdbomb what kind of start ups are you working on? PM me!

I talked to an admission counselor a few weeks ago and was told that they dont start reviewing applications until April of each year. They need to wait to see how many students are returning and what the freshman class will look live and housing availability until they can decide on transfers.

@norcal73 when do you apply?

Hi everyone! I am applying to transfer for fall 2016 and I wanted to know if I have a good chance of transferring if I have a 3.78 gpa? I also am transferring for computer science so I am pretty sure it will require a higher gpa. Please let me know :frowning: I am really worried. I have time to boost my gpa for fall and spring but I want to know if I have a good chance to get in in general.

@amessi12 Hi, right now I have a Asia based start-up that focuses on fitness/nutrition programs and meal customization. My second startup would be either chemical nutrition or tech gadgets, I’m international so I work with a bunch of STEM majors overseas.

Deadline is Feb 1

So I go to a school that works on the quarter system. Since my winter quarter ends in March, is there any way for me to update my transcript/app after it has been submitted in April?

bummmp.

Also, is it more difficult to transfer to the CompSci Business Admin major than it is to transfer to the regular CompSci major?

@Orangered123 I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure you’ll just send in your new grades once you get them.
