2016 and beyond wedding moms and dads (Part 2)

Color? Length? Venue? Any special physical needs? (I’m petite and nothing fit.)

Thanks for asking @bookworm. Maybe navy or some other type of blue, tea length, cocktail attire, 3/4 sleeve or at least not sleeveless. Luxury venue in Virginia on many acres. It is an opportunity for friends and family to meet and mingle- about 120 being invited. I’m not petite, 5’6, don’t need either plus size clothes or petite. Son on the other hand is 6’6 but fairly slim so the mother/son dance will be interesting with the difference in height! And I’m not a good dancer so I’m very nervous about the dance!

I was relieved when the kids didn’t have the traditional dances. They also didn’t have a wedding cake but several choices of desserts.
So, I have no suggestions about a song.

Yes ,I thought I may have gotten out of having to worry about dresses and dances when they got married last October. But, this is what they really want to do so I am going with the flow!

@sevmom check out this thread. You might find something there.

We are having a “wedding celebration” this August for my D and her H who were married last summer. We are doing one parent/child dance and finally came up with “What a Wonderful World” (Louis Armstrong did a famous version) as the song for their dance. My D vetoed Sunrise Sunset (from Fiddler on the Roof) as “over-done” but I still like it. I’d advise you to read the lyrics of any song you consider – as a few other ideas seemed good until we looked closely at the lyrics.

@happy1 I have looked at that one and like it. What I don’t want is anything too sappy, anything with references to mom in it , too country or religious. I am looking for classic, or rock or something new and modern that I haven’t heard before. Agree at looking at the lyrics . Some that are on lists that I’ve looked at, for instance, seem more appropriate in reference to lovers, not mothers and sons!

This is also essentially a wedding celebration but they will do some vows again but not exchange rings (as they already have and wear their rings). Their website makes it clear they are already married ( pictures of their micro wedding and narrative about the small wedding they had without any family present). They are excited about including family this time and many more of their friends .

Speaking of great lyrics… How about Mother by Pink Floyd?

Just kidding!!! :joy: Joking! Not a serious recommendation.

We are doing basically the same thing! Enjoy!

(And I’m guilty of liking sappy wedding music LOL)

You are up soon in August. Enjoy and please let us know how it went .

Hey, I don’t mind some level of sappiness , just not “too” sappy!

My son liked Disney so we danced to Phil Collins You’ll Be In My Heart from Tarzan. My cousin and her son danced to I Hope You Dance which I thought was a great choice. It is described as: A life-affirming song with an uplifting, timeless message, it’s based on the narration of a mother expressing the wish that her children will step out and embrace life, and take a chance on love and faith.

Thanks for that link @thumper1 . It seems geared to gowns and daughter in law has okayed my preference (tea length) to be looking at for a mid May wedding. I am just not that into dressing up , fancy clothes, doing hair and makeup, etc. so this is somewhat stressful for me. But i can clean up just fine if I need to !

I have never dyed my hair, haven’t really worn any makeup in decades( but I think I will take part in the makeup stuff on the day of the wedding as DIL showed me the website of the makeup person she is using when we saw them last weekend and the look is very natural). I don’t want to ruin their pictures by not having any makeup on!

I had my hair very very short before the pandemic but may keep it longer in a short ponytail with a nice barrette for the celebration. Not sure. So many decisions!

@tx5athome I looked at that because I was a big fan of Phil Collins and Genesis back in the day . Great choice!

I’ve said this before on this thread but dancing to a sappy song was something I dreaded as I tend to hate sappy songs and would agree that it would be totally unnatural for us. I didn’t k ow the song he chose until the DJ started to play it -and yep the lyrics were not really appropriate (do people really examine the lyrics during that moment!?). But it was a fun song that had a history between me and my kids and we had the BEST time hamming it up during our dance.

It really reflected our relationship so well! Moral of this story: your wedding, your dance - make it sappy, serious, fast or slow, fun or not. Make it memorable- for the two of you!

Paging @soozievt who is great at finding dress options.

Thanks for the page, @thumper1 ! Ha! I’ll see if I can help @sevmom with dress ideas, but can’t right now. Inundated with work. Maybe late at night when I am vegging out. But since she mentioned tea length and blue, I wore tea length and navy for my D2’s wedding. I can’t find the exact dress now (it was almost 5 years ago), but it is very similar to this one, but mine was navy with white embroidery and this one is royal blue with same tone embroidery:

Thanks @soozievt . I was actually googling things yesterday like British, tea length but didn’t see the Nataya site. I love those kinds of dresses but not sure how much I need to worry about coordinating with the bride’s stepmother. We’ve never met (except on zoom) because she and the dad live across the country. We were going to meet in person but the pandemic got in the way! I’d like to keep cost below $200 but could go up some for the right dress .

While I am on that page, though, here are some other blue tea length options:
(try to ignore the head gear!!)

Well, I looked at other sites (this is getting addictive)…

Now, I have to get back to work, (searching colleges, not dresses!).

@sevmom, didn’t see your price point until after I searched, but I still think I found some that might be in range. Anyway, the dress (very similar to one I got) at Nataya is $275 (I realize that is over $200).

Can we have wedding questions separate from the dress ones? I don’t mind either but would like some separation.

When I was shopping for my MOG, we had several people who were looking for dresses at the same time, it was very nice to have a place for all the dresses.

Just makes it a little less confusing

I could go up to $275 but definitely wouldn’t consider some of the even more expensive ones . I noticed that Elinadress one on Amazon yesterday and was really drawn to it when I saw it .Thanks! Enjoy your college searches!
