2016 summer internships in Washington DC

Hey guys,

So I am a graduating senior, and this summer I am looking for a paid internship within the realm of engineering research or any STEM field. I know a lot of application deadlines have already passed, but what internships are still available? Please keep them within the Washington DC area.

Thanks!

Nih in Bethesda and aeop/hsap (forgot which one is still open) has military bases around there

NIST internships generally do not pay http://www.nist.gov/ but would be good experience - primarily engineering focused. The NIH SIP is a possibility, but you need to start the process soon. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has a lab where they hire summer interns, but I don’t know if they are taking applications now. The Navy and the Army have SEAP programs, but they are filled. If you are interested in the medical field, you might want to try Navy Medical and Walter Reed, both in Bethesda, MD (where NIH is located). There are some big construction firms, like Clark, if you are interested in civil engineering.

You may also want to apply through NASA OSSI. There are a lot of interns at the Goddard Facility in Greenbelt, MD. You may also want to check out the Air and Space Museum internship program (they pay really well). The Smithsonian has some other science related internships - like at the Natural History Museum - some paid, some not paid.

@PandaBearMom do you know what the acceptance rate for NASA OSSI internships are? I applied to 15 opportunities, but haven’t heard back from any of them. One has already been filled.

It is probably getting too late for NASA OSSI. I would recommend that you set up an account at USAJobs and activate an automatic search for “pathways” in the locations that interest you. Pathways is the name for a US government internship program that (mostly) pays students to work for the federal government in internships during the summer (and sometimes during the school year). They recruit high school and college students with the aim of hoping that they will work for the government after college. I think this is your best option for now. Also, set up alerts on the keywords summer and internship in indeed.com and glassdoor.com
