When is Strawhats opening? They keep saying “soon.”
@choirsandstages I’d say anytime . . . Last year the application opened on November 15. They sent out an e-mail this week saying the app would be up “soon.” I think they are running into delays as they update their website.
Best wishes to all who are pre-screening for SETC in Kentucky and Mississippi this weekend!!
The StrawHat application is open! Registration is also open for IOTs – Institute of Outdoor Theatre auditions – and ITAs – Illinois Theatre Auditions.
There are some new auditions in Chicago for non-union actors over the age of 18 who reside in Chicago or the Chicago area, Chicago Theatre Access Auditions. The auditions are in January, but the application is only open December 11 through December 15. At last count about 36 equity and non-equity theatres will be in attendance.
Is there a list of the different summer stock programs and the places they perform? Is it too late to get an audition spot? My D is doing a month long Shakespeare workshop with a performance in May but that leaves 2 months with nothing! She is saying she wanted to sign up , but being a freshman didn’t realize how it worked, and thinks it is too late to get audition. I really don’t know anything… is there a book or something that lists and tell you what they are and when?
I think NETC and Strawhats are still open to submit applications - those are good options to start if you she can get to NY or MA in spring
@musicmama123 when I was in and first out of college there were books that listed companies, their seasons, and how to go about auditioning for each company, but as far as I can tell those are no longer published (someone please correct me if I am wrong) Most of that information is available on each company’s website, but you need to know where to look.
Playbill.com has a jobs section that will list auditions, and there is also Backstage.com. Playbill is free to search, Backstage requires a subscription.
In terms of combined audition conferences, UPTA (graduating seniors and professionals only), A1 and SETC applications have passed… MWTAs (Mid-West) may also be full. OTA (Ohio), NETC (New England), Strawhat (NYC), Outdoor Drama (NC) are still accepting applications, which are available online. Not sure if they are still doing them, but summer companies in NH also used to do a small combined audition sponsored by NH Theatre Association, I believe.
SETC, UPTA, and Strawhat maintain a list of theatres that have attended/ will attend. This could be a good way for her to research what specific companies are out there, what they offer in terms of compensation, and how to audition. Some will accept video auditions.
Something else she might want to look into is being a camp counselor at a sleep away camp. I did that for 2 summers in college, and loved it. Some of my students have really lives it as well. Depending on when her Shakespeare intensive ends, the timing could be perfect, since most camps don’t start until late June.
@MilMom A pain that the NETC’s and StrawHat’s are on the same weekend in 2018. My MT son is applying for both and requesting Saturday for StrawHat’s and NETC’s for Sunday. He goes to school in Boston so that may be doable for him. He was selected for the A1’s. Glad that will be in January! If there is a conflict in March, he will only do NETC’s. We will see how it all pans out!
Has anyone attended the C4 Atlanta Unified Auditions? Auditions are March 5-6, application deadline is January 5.
You probably already know this, but they are definitely open now! Check their facebook, twitter, and website for all of the info! My daughter got hers in right before xmas break- it’s such a lengthy process! We are both hoping she gets a slot this year. She applied last year right before the deadline, but no slot. She was a college freshman and had never even heard of Strawhats! We thought she was done with “outside” auditions until she graduated lol!
One of my daughter’s friends was waitlisted for UPTA in the Fall. He just heard yesterday that he got an audition slot! Just wanted to share this good news – these long waits can be discouraging!
Best wishes to everyone auditioning at A1 this weekend! Please let us know about your experience!
My D will be withdrawing from SETC as she already got a summer offer at an Equity House, so a spot will be opening up there.
@stagedoormama congratulations to your daughter! How terrific! And so great to have her plans set this early! Did she get the job through a unified audition or did theatre company audition at her school?
Good for her to know her summer plans so soon! We are patiently waiting to hear if my daughter received a Strawhats Audition spot!
Yes, waiting to hear from Strawhats here too – and NETC. @duxellen deja vu!
Too funny! When did your d/s apply to Strawhats? Daughter applied @ Dec 20th… we are waiting with baited breath! Haha has yet to do NETC- we had originally decided that since they were same weekend she would only apply for Strawhats- but now am thinking that she should apply just in case she doesn’t get a slot at Strawhats!
@janne006 - Neither! She sent her stuff in to a theatre that we have seen shows at in the past when we were on vacation. Had a meeting over Christmas while we were there and gave her an offer on the spot. She has always wanted to work there so she figured no point in spending the money to go to SETC when she was happy with her offer in hand.
That’ s so awesome!
