@gottastudy54 I’ve been told by other applicants as well as my admissions counselor that EC’s hold no bearing on transfer admissions, take that how you want to… most people think it’s the opposite, but USC’s transfer admissions is pretty unique.
What’s a good amount of finished GEs to have as a transfer applicant?
Hi everyone! I’d really appreciate if you guys could tell me my chances. I applied as a senior from HS and was originally rejected. I’m applying as a sophomore transfer student from a CSU. My fall GPA was a 4.0 and hopefully also close to that by the end of spring semester. By the end of spring, I will have over 30 transferrable units.
Both my parents graduated from USC, so I’d be legacy.
My EC’s aren’t too great…I’m in a sorority on campus, volunteer at a homeless shelter, am an ambassador for saving the marine animals company, etc.
@smileesarefree the more GEs you’ve completed the better.
@smileesarefree it depends on whether you’re a sophomore or junior applicant. I’d say 4 or 5 is pretty good for a sophomore, but juniors should have almost all of them done (2 core literacies need to be completed at USC).
to add to the post above, I was also part of the california scholarship federation and honor roll in high school
@moncc44 good news is that a lack of EC’s won’t impact your chances, and obviously the 4.0 is great. Just try to complete as many GE’s as possible, as that seems to be one of the most crucial factors in admissions. Good luck!
@penntousc by the end of spring semester, I should have around 6-7 completed
@moncc44 then I’d say you’ve got a pretty solid chance of getting in
I just found out from counselor, that as long as you complete all pre-req courses by your spring quarter you will be fine. Taking a pre-req during spring will prob get you a SGR, but it wont negatively impact your admission decision.
@pomeranian4rich thanks for the detailed reply, I appreciate it! The thing is, I’m applying to Marshall as a Business Administration major… not to Viterbi. Do you think you could re-evaulate my situation? Sorry for the inconvenience.
To summarize:
-I will have had all GE’s and Business Administration major prep completed by the end of this spring semester
-I have a 3.57 transferable gpa, though USC will recognize it as a 3.5 or a 3.51 as I got an F in a Bio class which I re-took and got an A in
-Received an A in Business Calc and Macro Econ, among other major prep courses
-I got a C in Micro Econ… yikes
-I have two W’s
-I’m taking Accounting 1BH next semester and plan to get an A and a Business Communication Writing course that I plan to get an A in too.
I have a decent amount of activities listed on the common app with leadership positions, work experience at a restaurant, and more specifically career orientated work experience.
As far as letters of rec go, I’m receiving a letter of recommendation from my Accounting Professor, the CEO of a company that I have been working at for years (he also happens to be a USC alum… not sure if that is even relevant or not but I can only hope that helps!), and possibly from another reputable USC alum.
Hope this gives you enough information about myself to work with. Thanks!
@usctransferivc I think you have a fair chance since you will have most GE and prerequisities completed by spring. Your gpa is on the low side and the two W doesn’t look too good. But I think they will take your ec and essay into consideration so write a well developed essay. You possibly will received a sgr because of your low gpa and the two W.
I did so poorly in high school… How much is it going to affect me for my application. By the end of the spring semester I’ll have 6 GE’S done, and a 3.9 transferable GPA with 32 completed units. Is my high school transcript going to bite me in the ass?
Also I have made significant progress towards my major, Econ
I could also mention in my essay my brothers ski accident that put him in a coma for 3 months affecting my HS GPA, but I don’t want to seem like I’m asking for pity. Thoughts?
@balshii if you think that really affected your hs performance then you should put it, but do explain how it applies to you going in a cc or wanting to transfer. Make a connection to your story.
@balshii if you’re going to have 30+ transferable credits, high school stats aren’t considered at all. They’re still going to request high school transcripts and test scores as proof that you took the ACT/SAT and received your diploma, but your grades and scores will not impact your chances.
@pomeranian4rich can you tell me what you think of my chances? i posted my stats a couple hours ago
i also have a prof writing me a letter of rec who graduated from USC if that helps
@penntousc wait I thought that they didn’t need SAT/ACT scores if you have 30+ units completed by the end of spring 2017? I read that straight from the transfer brochure I received in the mail. They do still ask for high school transcripts though to verify that you did graduate high school. I know that it costs like $40 to send SAT/ACT scores so I didn’t send them because I have over 30 credits completed already
@cassidylynnn you’re probably right, I was just making the point that nothing from high school matters with 30+ credits
