2017 Commits

DD signed her letter of intent today, anyone else?

DD signed hers, too.

S who had committed to Columbia for HW rowing received his LL today.

But, just to be clear, a LL is not used only by the Ivies and is not always for athletics:

[What are “Likely Letters” Like? - Ask The Dean](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/what-are-likely-letters-like.htm)

But, yes, within this thread, that is very likely  what it refers to.

My S received his LL for fencing at Columbia. His first choice he is so excited

My friend is going to Stanford for lacrosse.

Male rower to Columbia - lightweight rower

Likely Letter to University of Chicago for wrestling

I noticed on another website’s thread that there was a debate over whether recruited D3 athletes who have applied early decision (based on coaches support and request they apply ED) are supposed to post their decisions on “committed” boards.

Some say yes, as these athletes have given their commitment based on the promise of coaches support with admissions. If they are admitted they are obligated to attend. Others say, no, because there isnt certainty any kid will play for a school until admission is granted they should not say they’ve committed.

I’ve seen a bunch a D3 baskteball recruiting commitment stories (based on ED applications). On one sight there is a story about 2 basketball players committing to a NESCAC school and there is a note stating the NESCAC’s policy of admissions having the final say.

Is there an written NCAA rule on this issue? To me, I agree with the “yes” side above. Opinons?

Also, does anyone know how schools/coached typically feel about this issue?

BMDDAD,

You’ve got a couple questions here. One is related to communicating commitment and the other is related to admission.

There is no NCAA policy on communication committment as related to the recruit. He/She can say anything they want. IMHO I would say very little until until my son was accepted or signed an NLI. The schools are bound by NCAA rules. They will not publicize their recruits until the recruits have signed NLI for D1/D2 and been admitted. For D3 and Ivy it is admission because there is no athletic scholarship or money changing hands. However, I’ve noticed the Ivys and NESCAC schools (within D3) don’t really broadcast their recruits (even after admission) as much as other schools. In son’s sport (baseball), the 2013 rosters for many Ivys wasn’t posted until after official practices started in Sept. Harvard didn’t post theirs until very recently and Brown still has posted theirs publically.

Admission has the final say on everything related to Ivy and NESCAC athletics. It is in both of their policy statements on the web to prospective recruits. The coach is the “recommender”. and the Admissions Committee is the decision maker.

Truthfully, I don’t think most Coaches think too much about their verbally committed recruits communication practices. I think they may roll their eyes if a recruit gets a little out of hand before everything is finalized with Admissions.

Just accepted to Dartmouth - Track!

Also, teammate committed to Iowa State for track

triple - did Dartmouth ED acceptances come out officially, or did you hear from the coach? D has a friend who applied ED.

D, fencing, Columbia – committed in July, Likely in November, Admitted ED yesterday. Thanks to everyone for their help – especially Sherpa, schoolhouse, Varska and ihs76.

imafan – Dartmouth ED results have been released (yesterday, I think).

Columbia and Dartmouth both released ED results yesterday at 5PM.
The next two ivies to come out with ED results are: Brown 12th 5PM & UPenn 12th 6PM

Congrats everyone - Triplejumper, I know you were concerned a couple weeks ago about the LL. Did it ever arrive or were you kept in suspense right up to the ED notifications?

Turned out they decided to give it to another athlete who came in late to recruiting, leaving me in suspense. But I got in so I have no complaints.

glad it worked out (nice to have it over with, I’m sure!)

FYI: Princeton is now releasing their SCEA decisions on Tuesday, December 18th.

Why are there so many rowers?
