Starting a thread for the waitlisted. Please post your thoughts/updates/anything.

I am hoping MIT admits more from the WL than the 0 last year. Several of the people I know who have been admitted to MIT will go to Harvard/Yale if they get in, one already has a likely from Harvard. They were surprised that they even got in to MIT they didn't think they were techie enough and never had any science ECs.

Does MIT wait until May 1 before they start admitting students from the WL ? Or do they start admitting students as soon as they know that they are not meeting the enrollment targets ?

Every school admits more students than they can take for situations like this. It is called matriculation or yield rate. Last year, 70% of accepted students chose to come to MIT, which is higher than expected. That’s why they took nobody from the waitlist. If the yield rate is less than expected this year, then they will take people off the waitlist. MIT took 70 less students this year, probably in anticipation of a steady yield. So my guess is that they will end up taking some students off the waitlist this year. Exactly how much, I can’t say. You will have to wait until after May 1.

After May 1, when MIT knows whether they’ll be able to go to the waitlist and exactly how many students they’ll be able to take if so, there will be another selection meeting of the admissions committee. All waitlisted applicants will be discussed again, and they’ll decide which n to admit. If necessary, they’ll repeat the process – there was one year they took something like 40 applicants from the waitlist, then a week or two later, they took another ten.
