Ya’ll are really overemphasizing the importance of knowing your counselor. Decisions, including SGRs, are determined by a committee.
Do you guys think that if they haven’t requested spring grades by now, they won’t need to? I still have my math in progress, but have not been contacted. Applying under Price.
@jobsoutofcollege Nope. Barely anyone has heard anything. The amount of people in this thread who have actually gotten a decision or a SGR is probably less than 10. It’s still very early in the process.
@Capital_Dan forming a close relationship with your counselor is a big deal at USC because your counselor is the first person to read your app.
I would never go too far and talk about favorite music and sports and such, I actually think that would be a negative on your app. But who knows.
@csumit I got one. (SGR) Most TTP people have gotten one.
@joeyfreshwater hmmm maybe I haven’t been following this thread closely enough. Has anyone heard anything from Viterbi?
My mailman and I have become like best friends because of this process. Every day, I run out to that mailbox when I hear his truck.
So i know that its better for applicants to complete most of the GE classes prior to transferring… I haven’t really completed too many of them. But I read that most classes taken at a 4 year university transfer over for credit. I go to UMichigan so is it a big deal if i haven’t taken significant GE classes since many of my credits are likely transferable?
@markspencer22 why don’t you like UMichigan if you don’t mind me asking?
@Elena1355 Well I’m from LA so thats primarily why I want to transfer to USC haha. Im not a fan of the weather and I don’t feel like I can accomplish my goals here in Michigan. I’m a musician and a lot of my interests have to do with what goes on locally so LA is where I need to stay. I wish I realized that back in senior year of high school…
So I guess my case is a little unusual. I would definitely recommend Michigan to pretty much anyone. Even though I really want to leave, I do think that theres something here for everyone. Best of luck!
A lot of TTPs don’t get SGRs just fyi. They get accepted straight up with just first term grades. Relationship with advisor can be very important. They pitch you to the group. But overdoing it and forcing a relationship (especially now, it’s too late) is not a good move. But if you don’t have one it’s not the end of the world either. Your app may speak for itself!
@csumit Somebody on here claimed to work as an admissions intern a few years back and stated that the committee is made up of your counselor and two others. If they all have to vote and your counselor hates you, lol, I can see how that might be a problem. I don’t know if this is actually true or not though.
i just realized i forgot to add usc as a school on my fafsa and added it immediately… does anyone know if this will pose a problem towards my financial aid if i get accepted?
@CADREAMIN Since you seem to know a lot about the process, could I expect to get in with a 3.8 this semester after getting a 3.4 in the fall semester then an SGR? I’m TTP and I’m at a Southern California JuCo.
@joeyfreshwater The 3.4 is why you got the SGR. They want to see a 3.7 or 3.8 with some flexibility given to STEM at four year schools or abroad. TTP applicants that hit that 3.8+ the first semester are less likely to see an SGR. You should be good, but those second semester grades are important. Good luck!
Kinda strange that it is advantageous to build a relationship with your counselor.
@Twenmi LOL in what universe is that strange?
@gearsekandou your application should speak for itself, as it does for pretty much every other school. You shouldn’t have to pander to a counselor for a better shot.
Furthermore, that may increase bias in their system, as some students may get counselors who have been described as “less friendly” or “unresponsive”
@Twenmi if you apply for a job, do you follow up? It’s how the real world works. Those who want it more win more, but obviously it’s not going to hurt to not get in touch with them.
But yes, it is true that some counselors are less friendly or responsive, and so it may not help applicants with those counselors. However, (I may be wrong) only applicants who have the same counselor are compared to one another. So for applicants who’ve got a counselor that is less friendly or unresponsive, building a relationship with the counselor is a non factor.
@penntousc I get what you are saying, I’m still unsure if I wholeheartedly agree with it but I mean I suppose I’d rather see students who are in love with USC and do everything they can to get in get in.
