Have no idea how many applied as transfer students for this recent class that started in Sept. but it appears there are about 35-40 transfers out of a class of around 1,780.
While those are decent stats, I would say that your extracurricular are extremely important as well as the letters of recommendation. If you were to post an essay I would be able to rate your chances more accurately.
That being said, transferring is fairly common and I know a good number of transfer students.
Good luck
just fyi—I know that the transfer acceptance rate for the incoming class last year was less than 2%, and there were only 25 transfers. I heard those numbers both from the transfer admissions counselor, and had them confirmed by a friend who works in admissions. More transfers were accepted in the class that started in September; 35-40 is a good estimate, but the acceptance rate was similar. It is significantly harder to get in as a transfer than as a first-year. That being said, it does happen! especially if you have a very clear idea why 1. your current school can’t give you what you need, 2. how uchicago, specifically, over all other schools, can fix that, and 3. you show that you can offer something to the uchicago community as well. be specific, be creative. Good luck!
The first-year class this year is much larger than any class in the past. If they don’t severely cut back on admissions for next year’s entering class (which doesn’t seem likely), there is going to be a huge strain on college housing next year. I don’t see how that can have any effect other than to limit transfer acceptances.
You might have a better chance if you were to transfer in your sophomore year, at that time the HS records are not used against you. You should keep up with the UIUC GPA and in hope to make the transition.
